New Skin
[Part 1 || The First Day of My Life]
[The rain finally decides to subside as Dillon Shaw reaches the door of his apartment building. He lets out a deep sigh as he digs into his pocket and pulls out his keys. The rain has soaked his sweatshirt, sweatpants, and gym bag. He enters the apartment building and climbs the staircase to the fourth floor. There is a long, narrow hallway that leads to Dillon’s apartment. He opens the door to a pitch-black studio. Dillon enters the room, taking off his wet bag and shoes. He walks a few steps further to a light switch on the wall, flipping the switch up…]
“SURPRISE!!!”
“Greatness? That’s what this is all about? I always knew you were driven and extremely motivated to achieve greatness, but at what cost?”
“At any cost. Take a look around, Sean. I just turned thirty and this is what I’ve made for myself. I have a mid-level apartment in Columbus, Ohio. My car barely runs, my bank account is always thin and I’m sick of it. I should have more. I should be more.”
“SURPRISE!!!”
[Dillon jumps backwards, almost in a defensive stance. It takes him a moment to realize that his apartment is full of his closest friends, all dressed ready for a party. Dillon shakes his head in disbelief.]
“What the hell is going on?”
“What the hell is going on?”
[The crowd laughs at Dillon’s reaction. A tall, skinny man steps forward from the group and approaches Dillon. This is Sean, one of Dillon’s closest and trusted friends. Sean puts his hand on Dillon’s shoulder while handing him a bottle of beer.]
“Happy Birthday, Shaw! Did you think we forgot? Thirty years old, man. We had to do something special for this.”
“Oh, come on, man. Look at everyone who showed up tonight. We are all stoked to see you.”
“Distraction? Your best friend throwing you a surprise party for your birthday is a distraction?”
“Honestly, I don’t have a clue what works for you anymore. Nobody does. We barely hear from you and when I do the conversations last for about two minutes. I don’t know what to do anymore.”
“Look, I’m trying to take my career to the next level. In order for me to do that, I need to make several changes in my life. I need to do what’s good for me right now. If people can’t accept that, then they don’t understand how greatness works.”
“Happy Birthday, Shaw! Did you think we forgot? Thirty years old, man. We had to do something special for this.”
[Dillon rolls his eyes and takes the beer from Sean.]
“No, you really didn’t.”
“No, you really didn’t.”
“Oh, come on, man. Look at everyone who showed up tonight. We are all stoked to see you.”
[Taking a sip from his beer, Dillon looks around the room as more people from the group start to approach him. He gives out a few handshakes and hugs before turning back to Sean.]
“Look, I know you guys are trying to do something good here, but I can’t really deal with this tonight.”
“Look, I know you guys are trying to do something good here, but I can’t really deal with this tonight.”
[Sean looks at Dillon with a confused stare.]
“What do you mean? It’s just a small gathering of good people at your place. Just relax and have fun. Tell the guys what you’ve been doing for work…”
“You’re kidding me…”
“No, I’m not. Like I was just saying to Eric, I’m in the middle of some important negotiations right now and I can’t have this distraction.”
“What do you mean? It’s just a small gathering of good people at your place. Just relax and have fun. Tell the guys what you’ve been doing for work…”
[This sparks an interest with some of the guests and now Dillon is on the spot to talk about what he’s been doing for the past three years.]
“I’ve been working and taking gigs as a professional wrestler.”
“I’ve been working and taking gigs as a professional wrestler.”
[Eric, one of Dillon’s former college roommates, smirks and nods his head in approval.]
“That’s pretty interesting, Shaw. I can totally see you doing something like that. Have you been doing well? Kicking ass?”
“Nothing big time, yet, but I’m actually in the middle of some important negotiations right now. Excuse me for a second…”

[Dillon walks away from the group and approaches Sean. He grabs him by the arm and pulls him off to the side.]
“I know you don’t want to hear this, but this isn’t happening tonight. I need you to get everyone out of here right away.”

[Dillon can tell that Sean is getting pissed. He shrugs his shoulders and responds.]
“At this point, yes, it is a distraction.”
“At this point, yes, it is a distraction.”
[Sean walks away from Dillon and starts escorting the guests out of the apartment. Everyone seems really confused about the situation. Dillon gives a lazy wave to his friends as they leave.]
“Have a good night and drive safe. We will get together another time, I promise.”
“Have a good night and drive safe. We will get together another time, I promise.”
[After the last guest leaves, Sean closes the door and starts to clean up the bottles and glasses.]
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll take care of it later.”
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll take care of it later.”
[Sean doesn’t respond. He finishes cleaning up and grabs his jacket to leave.]
“Don’t be pissed at me, man. You should have talked to me first. Dumping this onto my lap was never going to work.”

“I understand what you’re saying and if you feel dissatisfied with your life, but I’m just trying to be here for you to do whatever I can.”
“If you want to help me, just sit back and watch. ‘The Spectacular’ Dillon Shaw is on the verge of really breaking through and once that happens, you’ll realize why I decided to go this route. Then, promote my live events and down the road you can help out with merchandise sales.”
[Dillon smirks at Sean, who returns it before walking back to hug his long-time friend.]
“Alright, asshole, achieve your greatness and make your money. I’ll sit back and enjoy the show.”
“Alright, asshole, achieve your greatness and make your money. I’ll sit back and enjoy the show.”
[With that, Sean turns once again and leaves. Dillon slumps down on his couch and lets out a sigh of relief as he sits alone in his apartment.]
“My path is now clear. I know exactly what I need to do in order to reach the level of success that I deserve. I’ve been a champion my entire life, always excelling and improving my technique. That was all I needed to climb to the top of the collegiate ladder and take my spot at the top. I have now come to realize that the world of professional wrestling requires a different set of skills to reach the upper echelon. Now I am ready to test myself against legitimate competition in a legitimate wrestling promotion.”
“Union Battleground has come to me with the most lucrative offer and I have decided to sign on the dotted line. This is a big moment for me. Now, I do realize that Union Battleground is a growing brand still trying to find its footing. From what I’ve seen so far, I expect big things from this company. I truly believe I can be a significant part of that growth. With my focus and talents, I will raise the bar for technical wrestling in Union Battleground. Don’t think for a second that I’m going to sit back and wait for people to find me here. I am going after top talent right from the start. When I show up to the arena, I’m ready to go at any moment. The world is about to find out what happens when you step up to Dillon Shaw. I don’t think they will like the results.”
“Everyone on this roster better know how to get back up to their feet, because once I get you on your back I’ll start dissecting every part of your body until you can’t move. But staying on your feet might be more difficult, because of my double-leg shot and variety of maneuvers to ground my opponents. Truth be told, I’m a goddamn nightmare of a match up. For over twenty years, my days have consisted of throwing bodies around a wrestling mat, hitting bags and mitts with some of the hardest hitting strikers in the midwest, and getting myself into optimized human condition. I’ve done it all for a lot of years and I’ve always looked good doing it.”
“Not only do I possess the highest level of amature wrestling credentials, I’m willing to do absolutely anything to win. The fastest way to get ahead in this business is to earn victories and gain momentum. You need to give the booker no reason to hold you down. Let the results speak for themselves. Along with that comes respect and opportunity. That’s what I’m after. I challenge anyone to step in my way and face the consequences.”
“We all like fights. We all want to experience excellence. We all want to be entertained. From this moment on, every time ‘The Spectacular’ Dillon Shaw appears on a Union Battleground card, you’ll be guaranteed all three. Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but I truly believe people need to know and understand what I’m capable of. Take notes, take video, do whatever you need to do. Just be sure to understand that Dillon Shaw is about to enter your world. It might not be this week, this month, or this year, but if your name is on the roster our paths will eventually cross. When that time comes, it’ll be your turn to experience something spectacular.”
