"SO I MET THIS GIRL IN UNION BATTLEGROUND"
"The Ancient Roman biographer, Cornelius Nepos, said 'After darkness comes the light.' He just didn't tell me that the Light would come in the form of Cheyenne Walker. Either way, he was right."
The two-hour drive from Boise City, Oklahoma to Amarillo, Texas fleeted away quickly like a tumbleweed in a hot Texas gust. Despite their obvious cultural differences, Xion and Cheyenne seemed to have more in common than they realized. Simple living. Church. A desire to have a successful career in wrestling. The conversation from the Walker Farm to the outskirts of Amarillo was natural and free flowing. Cheyenne wore her big bright smile the entire way and Xion couldn't take his eyes off of her beaming face. It was a shame that they were interrupted by the chirping of Xion's phone. Xion looked at his cell phone and read a text message from Southwest Airlines.
"Shit!" He exclaimed as he looked up from his phone. Cheyenne's bright smile slowly disappeared as she noticed the scowl on Xion's face.
"What's the matter?" She responded with a concerned look.
"My flight was delayed three hours for maintenance in Charlotte. What am I supposed to do in Amarillo for the next five hours? I was supposed to meet a friend in Duluth tonight."
For the first time in a couple hours there was an awkward pause between the two friends. Suddenly Cheyenne's face lit up.
"Illa stay with ya to keep ya company! Momma has Bible Study tonight and it's Dukes of Hazzard night for Daddy. Illa make sure ya aren't lonely." There was a genuine desire in her eyes to make him happy.
"I can't ask you to stay here, Cheye. It's going to be a long day." The protest didn't dissuade her. "Nothing doing. Plus, I have an idea to kill time."
Xion felt bad making Cheyenne stay but he did enjoy her company. And who could say no to a beautiful country girl with an idea? "Okay, what do you have in mind."
"My wrestling school is here in Amarillo. How about you and me go over there and train together? Maybe we can teach each other some new moves?" Again she beamed a smile at him.
"Are you serious?" An amused smirk formed on Xion's face. "You actually want to spar with me?"
"What? Ya don't think I can take ya? I already showed ya back at the farm that I'm stronger than a horse. We're gonna be in the same wrestling company soon, so ya best get used to me now."
She pulls to the side of road, putting the truck in park. In front of them is a fork in the road.
“One way is to the airport and the other to the school. I can wait till you decide.”
Xion and Cheyenne walked into the Amarillo Wrestling Academy. Cheyenne introduced Xion to the owner and lead trainer, Doc Sarpolis, a retired local talent from Amarillo’s heyday. Doc was well into his 60’s and was definitely passed his prime, but he kept in fairly good shape. After touting Cheyenne’s infinite potential and superhero strength, he gave them free reign of the training facility and ring.
Cheyenne changed into her wrestling gear in the women’s locker room while Xion changed into some Jordan brand basketball shorts and shoes. When Cheyenne stepped out of the women’s locker room, she caught a glance of Xion’s well-defined upper body before he put on a matching Jordan sleeveless T-shirt. She couldn’t help but gasp before Xion directed his attention to her.
“Are you ready to do this?” He asked as she became flushed from her distraction.
Cheyenne walked past Xion smirking with confidence. He caught himself checking out Cheyenne’s toned physique as she walked by. “Let’s do this.” She said as she walked up the ring steps and opened the ropes to taunt him. He chuckled in his throat and shook his head. “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”
Inside the ring, they warmed up with some basic stretches for several minutes. The whole time they stared at each other, not realizing they were doing it. Finally, they were ready to grapple and Cheyenne gave Xion one last taunt.
“Be prepared to lose Xion Ben-Judah!”
Xion paused for a moment and shook his head one more time before getting his game face on as they began to circle each other. “Let’s just tie-up, Cheye.”
The tie-up was tight. Xion was surprised by Cheyenne’s strength. Cheyenne noticed that despite his surprise, he was holding back.
“Come on, Xion! Don’t be a wuss! Show me what you got!” Cheyenne yelled.
Suddenly, after several moments of push and pull, Xion overpowered Cheyenne and sent her flying backwards. She landed on her bottom with an audible thud. She looked up at Xion with shock. The look spooked him and he reaches out with a hand. “Cheye, I’m sorry.”
Cheyenne swats Xion’s hand away and gets up quickly. She wanted to get him back quickly. “Maybe this wasn’t a good idea.” He retorted.
As soon as the words left his lips, Cheyenne ran at Xion and half tackled, half speared him to the mat with a banshee-like shriek. Xion was definitely caught off-guard as he fell back easily. He now had a taste of her brute strength. He’d been hit harder by other wrestlers, but Cheyenne’s strength was the hardest he’d felt from any female.
Still distracted by her spear, Cheyenne was able to lock into a rear naked choke. She wrapped her muscular legs tightly around his waist and her arms around his neck and head, pulling with all her might.
“TAP!" She screamed out over and over again. Xion could shook his head in the negative as Cheyenne was actually cutting off her his air supply. His refusal only made her increase the pressure.
"COME ON XION! TAPOUT! YOU CAN'T ESCAPE THIS!" She yelled.
Xion hissed as he tried to get out of the hold. Despite his strength advantage, Cheyenne was giving him a run for his money. Finally, he had enough of struggling and lunged toward the ropes, hoping she would follow the rules and break the hold, which she did.
“DARN IT!” She screamed as she slapped the mat. Xion held onto the ropes as he tried to get his air back. As he stood up, she scurried to the turnbuckle. She watched him intently, calculating her next move. As Xion straightened up, Cheyenne hit the ropes and delivered a stiff clothesline that dropped him into the center of the ring.
Dazed by the Cheyenne’s offense, Xion closed his eyes to center himself. When he opened his eyes, he saw Cheyenne coming down mid-air from the top turnbuckle with a pointed elbow coming right at his chest. The instincts kicked in and Xion sprang up to catch her and use her momentum to hit a tilt-a-whirl side slam, knocking the air out of her.
Xion stood up and crouched down to check on Cheyenne. He brushed her hair away from her face and she scowled at him. “Cheye, are you okay?”
Cheyenne didn’t answer back. She was clearly angry that he was able to best her. “Cheye, say something.” Still no response. Suddenly, she grabbed around his head and headlocked him, bringing him down to the mat with her. “I’m gonna make ya tap, Xion Ben-Judah!”
Xion was about to tap due to the awkward angle of the headlock but insteads squeezed her side and tickled her. Cheyenne let out a scream that echoed in the training facility. This gave Xion the opportunity to slip out of the headlock and flip her over so that he straddled her and could hold Cheyenne’s strong arms down. “Not when I can use my secret weapon.”
“That’s not fair!” Cheyenne said with a big smile.
There was a charged moment between them as Xion looked into her eyes. “Oh, what the hell!”
“What the hell what?” Cheyenne responded before she was silenced by his lips on hers. At first she was stunned by the kiss but she softened and closed her eyes. The kiss was awkward at first until Cheyenne started to reciprocate it.
For several moments, they were lost in the kiss. Was this really happening?
“Of course I want to help promote the show!”
The sound of Doc Sarpolis talking loudly on his cell phone broke the moment. Xion quickly got up as Cheyenne looked around wondering what happened to the kiss. Doc walked up to the ring as they composed themselves.
“Did you two find some chemistry?” The former grappler said with intrigue.
Xion and Cheyenne looked at each other, searching for an answer. Cheyenne came up with an answer.
“Uh...heck ya, Doc. I think we might be able to work together sooner than later.” She reached up for a hand as Xion helped her up.
“Yeah, it was quite unexpected. But, um…, shouldn't we start cleaning up before heading to the airport, Cheye?” Xion added.
Cheyenne smiled at Xion with a glow. It was his turn to be flustered.
