Time flies. The days are long but the years are short. Whatever analogy you wanna say, It’s crazy that we’re already in October and just a few short months away to season three. As we draw closer to vamping back up, I have a few topics I’d like to throw out and get your input.
GOING SMALLER IN ORDER TO GROW BIGGER
When Union Battleground first began, the idea was to run a one hour show, with a 3-4 match maximum and rely heavily on segments for storyline progressions and character development. For season three, I’d like to get back to that format. So three big things that come from this:
#1 A smaller roster. I think in order to keep everyone involved with a feud or storyline, I believe a roster cap should be implemented. The tentative number there is 20, which may or may not include any tag teams. As of now I have rallied two others who have agreed to help with staff duties, so those numbers could change. There also has been some discussions of adding a second show that could be a more angled, relaxed, and summarized format; while Lights Out will be fully competitive and fully written. In essence, the second show could be regarded as a developmental show, allowing those who may not make the main 20 man cut to still come aboard and hone their characters, or even allow people to develop secondary characters in a competitive environment. Or hell, just have a fun purely angled atmosphere.
#2 Smaller venue(s). With a smaller company, smaller venues will obviously follow. Last season I picked places that ranged around the 7-10,000 capacity, but with this new concept format, I think a better capacity figure would be somewhere around 3-5000, with the possible exceptions for Guerrilla Warfare and Coup de Grâce. I have spoke with some of you about the idea of having a permanent venue as well, like NXT and Impact, that I have tentatively titled “The Bunker”. The big question with this is whether or not we want to continue being a traveling company or have one designated venue.
#3 A move to a monthly schedule? This is something that I had pondered before I brought in some staff help, but I still want to put it out there to see what you all think. The question, do we stay with a biweekly schedule or should we move to a monthly schedule? The monthly schedule idea is that each month we would put on a PPV show with its own unique name, and axing Lights Out.
Now for storyline purposes, Gunnar Graves can explain that since Axel tried to hotshot the company, the Battleground hemorrhaged money and has to do some cost cutting.
JUDGING RUBRIC
When I first started brainstorming Union Battleground in late 2016, I had in mind that it would have a unique universe similar to what Lucha Underground has. For anyone who’s been here for a good amount of time, you’ll know that we have literally killed off characters and have done some wild supernatural and gory angles that don’t normally fit in the “reality era”.
While we’ve had cosmic time travelers, covert government agents, mob kingpins, whatever Hubert Smalls is, cult leaders, and spooky mortals mixed in with the more realistic characters, I think that’s all still possible with the freedom to character build.
In short, I believe for season three, I will be revamping the judging rubric to veer more towards character building and storytelling, and less on shoot trash talking. I get that shoots are important to wrestling and it will still play a major role here (possibly encouraged more for show segments), I want to give people freedom to write what they want and not have to be dictated by a checklist.
That’s all I have for now, if some other things come up, I’ll add it into this thread.
TL;DR
Let me hear your opinions on the following matters:
Smaller Roster
Smaller Show
Smaller Venues/Permanent Venue
Second Show
Biweekly or Monthly
Judging Rubric
Adjusted RP limits
