It was a brisk fifty-four degrees Fahrenheit in Mexico City, Mexico when the red eye flight from Tokyo touched down on the tarmac. The doors to the plane open and the young lion known as Sakaguchi Kyoshi stepped into the airport. For the first time in his life, Kyoshi was no longer in the Land of the Rising Sun. Keeping in line with the tradition of wrestlers before him, Kyoshi had set out from pro-wrestling school with a deep desire to prove himself to the world.
The term “young lion” was always meant to inspire unbridled enthusiasm and a sense of wanderlust as wrestlers from Japan would leave Japan for the sake of building experience and knowledge of wrestling around the world before eventually returning home with a newfound understanding of the art.
Kyoshi was lucky, luckier than most in his position. Few wrestlers got to walk out of school with a solid contract signed. Few stayed in Japan and became the next big stars and others wandered off into the world to make their own way. Kyoshi was a blend of the two. After meeting a former wrestling great and his new manager, Justin King, the wily veteran had taken a liking to the young up and coming Japanese star. Now, settled in Mexico and ready to prove himself in a brand-new promotion ran by Axel Graves, Sakaguchi Kyoshi was convinced that his career was moving in the right direction.
Standing in the airport, waiting for the young man, was Justin King. He dressed just as Kyoshi had first met him. He wore a pair of designer sunglasses, a black suit that blended into his black undershirt. His hair was slicked back and so silver it glistened in the sun that radiated in through the windows. His grin was wide and shark like in appearance and had a feeling of inviting to him. His grin widened and his arms outstretched like a playful bear as he screamed towards him.
Justin King: Sakaguchi Kyoshi! How is my favorite beast from the far east?
Kyoshi embraced his manager and protégé, exchanging pleasantries.
Sakaguchi Kyoshi: Good, to see you.
Kyoshi’s English still needed some work, but King was confident that he could help him with so Kyoshi didn’t worry about it.
Justin King: Come on, I have a cab waiting for you! We need to get you to the arena! You have a big match coming up.
Kyoshi: Big match?
Kyoshi had not been informed of any matches scheduled, only that he had been signed to Union Battleground with a stellar contract.
Justin King: Of course! My star pupil isn’t going to go in as some kind of no account jobber!
King shuffled Kyoshi into the cab, the cab driver dropping his two bags into the trunk before taking off into the city.
Justin King: I got you into the opening tournament for the Union Battleground Championship! It is a sixteen man tournament to determine who will be the inaugural champion of Union Battleground! An enormous honor to be sure, but I have no doubt that you will be able to crush the competition and become the first champion!
Kyoshi could not believe his ears. He had a chance to become the FIRST Union Battleground Champion? What an honor!
Sakaguchi Kyoshi: First Champion?
Justin King: Yes! The first! Your first opponent is Alex Villiers. Don’t worry, you will be able to easily walk through the winner. Just one win on a road to instant superstardom thanks to your picture perfect agent, Justin King.
Sakaguchi Kyoshi: Thank you!
Justin King: Thank me after you win your first match! Now! In regards to tactics! I think-
King began to ramble from there, but Kyoshi was only half listening to his mentor. The thought of being the first UB Champion, filled him with content. Already fresh off the plane and could potentially make history.
Minutes past as the cab drove through the city. Justin King slipped the driver a $10 for their $9.74 cab and together the two entered into the arena in Mexicali, ready to make history.
Justin King: Just remember what I told you Kyoshi, winning is all that is important.
Kyoshi nodded, not sure what to make of that, but decided that now was not the time to press the issue. He had a match to think about and was going to get to work on training for Alex Villiers.
