New Skin
[Part 2 || A Different Voice]
[It’s 7am and Dillon is being pushed through the front offices of the WAX radio station in downtown Mobile, Alabama. The radio station is running behind so they are rushing upstairs to the booth for a scheduled interview. Dillon steps out of the elevator on the 9th floor and continues to follow the assistant to the studio. He is led through several doorways before finally reaching the studio where “Scotty Davis Morning Sports Talk” is currently on the air. Scotty goes to a commercial break as he sees Dillon enter the studio with his assistant. He waves them into the booth as Dillon quickly removes his jacket. Scotty stands up from his chair and extends his hand for Dillon to shake while gesturing to the seat across from him.]
“Good morning, Dillon, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Scotty Davis. I’m glad you could make it.”
“No problem. We don’t have very much time to run through things, so just be prepared to answer some questions about the upcoming event in Mobile. Keep your responses short and we should be able to get through this rather quickly. Does that make sense?”
“Yeah. Doesn’t sound like brain surgery.”
“Good morning, Dillon, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Scotty Davis. I’m glad you could make it.”
[Dillon looks slightly annoyed by being rushed around this early in the morning. He shakes Scotty’’s hand and sits down in the chair across from him.]
“Let’s just get this started. I have a long day ahead of me.”

“Yeah. Doesn’t sound like brain surgery.”
“Good. Now, I just need you to put on the headphones in front of you and we’re going to be back on the air in about ten seconds. Don’t forget to speak clearly into the microphone.”
[Dillon quickly puts the headphones onto his head while the producer counts down from five and gestures to Scotty when the show is back on.]
“We’re back! This is Scotty Davis Morning Sports Talk and joining me in the studio right now, as promised, is one of the men competing in the big Union Battleground wrestling event that’s taking place at the Mobile Civic Center on April 28th. Ladies and gentleman, please give a warm welcome to Dillon Shaw!”
“Welcome to the show, Dillon. Now, tell us a little bit about Union Battleground. From what I’ve read, it’s a relatively new wrestling company, is that correct?”
“It is a relatively young promotion, but already there’s been tremendous buzz about what we’re doing. This is actually my first appearance with Union Battleground, but I’ve followed the company for months and have seen incredible shows being produced. Now it’s my turn to bring my set of skills to the table.”

[Dillon smiles at that introduction as he leans forward, speaking directly into the microphone.]
“Hello, Alabama.”

“How have you connected with the fans so far? I know you grew up in Ohio and have a storied amatuer wrestling career, but how have the fans been treating you that might not be as familiar with your history in Ohio?”
“I had a little time to meet with the fans at the pay-per-view event in New Orleans and I have to admit, they really take our shows to the next level. You’re right, I’m an Ohio guy, but I’ve really enjoyed my time on the road so far. It’s really nothing new for me. I have been traveling the country and competing for years.”
[Dillon laughs for a second.]
“That experience must make things easier for you. Now speaking of your successful career with Ohio State University and nearly representing our country in the olympics, what sort of challenges do you expect to encounter in Union Battleground?”
“I’m trying to be as realistic as possible about this whole situation. I know that I’ll be facing a lot of different styles in this new athletic venture, but let’s be honest...I’m playing chess in a room full of children playing checkers.”

“What exactly do you mean by that?”
“It means that my skills are on another level. Until I get inside the ring and show exactly what I’m talking about, it is all talk. But trust me, once the audience gets an idea of what I’m about and what I can do, they will see it’s a lot more than bravado.”
[Both men laugh. Scotty looks down at his notes before responding.]
“I see that your debut match is against Ryan Zane, a former Hollywood stunt man. What do you make of an opponent like this?”
“This is sort of what I was alluding to earlier. This guy has no business in any kind of athletic event against me. I’m a well-experienced professional and this guy throws himself off of buildings. I think reality speaks for itself.”

“Maybe he’s expecting to catch you off guard? He does have a somewhat unique and unpredictable style. Does that worry you at all?”
[Dillon smirks.]
“Not in the least. My biggest strength while competing is my ability to adapt to any situation. There might be a few obstacles in this match, but I know I’ll figure out a way to get the job done.”

“Even with an unfamiliar stage and the bright lights of Union Battleground shining down on you for the first time?”
[Shaw’s smile grows wider as he slowly nods his head.]
“Even with the change of scenery, I’m very confident in my skills. There is a damn good reason they brought me here, Scotty. On April 28th, I’ll be able to show exactly why.”

“It looks like the fans will be in for quite a show at the Mobile Civic Center on Friday night. I can’t wait to see Union Battleground live and I will be there in attendance to take in all the action. Dillon Shaw, thank you for taking the time to stop by and talk to us this morning.”
“Thanks, Scotty. I’ll be back in a few months, hopefully with some gold over my shoulder.”
“Sounds like a deal! Maybe you can come back on after you win a championship in Union Battleground. You know I always have room for champions in this studio…”
“I plan on starting that path right here in Mobile. I’ll see you and all the fans on Friday night. Get ready to witness history. It will be spectacular. No doubt.”
[With that, Scotty sends the show to commercial break as the scene fades.]
“This moment has been building for several years. Ever since I started taking my professional wrestling career more seriously, I have been working towards this event. Finally, I will be able to showcase my abilities on a proper stage. If we come anywhere near a sellout crowd, we are looking at 10,000 people. Hell, I'd be satisfied with half that amount. It has been a long time since I've competed in front of a crowd like that. That is when Dillon Shaw thrives. That's when spectacular things happen.”
“Ryan Zane was the unfortunate soul lucky enough to draw me for my first match in Union Battleground. He has no idea what has been building inside of me over the past few years. Ryan is about to walk into all of it. Not only that, but he's also about to meet the most technically sound wrestler on the entire roster. I don't rely on gimmicks or weapons. I show up with a complete game and inflict tremendous pain on my opponents. There is just something about asserting my dominance onto another competitor that I crave. I have to admit, I find myself enjoying it the entire time.”
“I am legitimately interested in how you plan on approaching this match, Ryan. From the perspective of anyone with half a brain, you are about to step into quicksand. There is no way for you to escape this. You are out-skilled and over-matched. If you are hoping for a puncher’s chance in this fight, you might as well think about career preservation, because that’s never going to work. If Ryan feels like rolling the dice, who am I to stop him?”
“But my opponent needs to realize that this isn’t Hollywood. This isn’t the movies, Ryan. The world you are about to step into is very real and it is very dangerous. I have been hurting people for years, nearly my entire life. This isn’t a joke or a game to me. I’m playing for my livelihood and I’m nearly impossible to beat with those stakes. What are you playing for, Ryan? The spotlight?”
“You won’t find that against me. It’s nothing but bumps and bruises when we meet face to face. I hope you realize that our goals aren’t very different, but our ability to achieve these goals is dramatically different. I’m looking for more exposure, a bigger payday, and you stand in my way of doing that. Unfortunately for you, only one of us will emerge as the superior competitor. Step aside, Ryan, because I won’t hesitate to move you. You can resist if you want. I don’t mind when a victim puts up a fight.”
