THEN
Every beginning used to be nerve wracking for her. She was always accompanied by one of her seniors and hid behind their experience and just smiled at the company men tasked with the formalities. Now she’s been through it so many times that it’s almost become a routine. She looked at the Union Battleground official seated across from her. Axel Graves got her and Aokigahara in the door but this woman was tasked with ironing out the details. She remembered her being charmed by Uncle Aoki’s advances and quips. Kimitsu just thought she was too polite. Those people always had something to hide. Now she stares with her awkward expression trying not to crack under Kimitsu’s gaze. She didn’t smile much anymore.
“Um, did you hear me?”
Kimitsu snapped up. “What? Yeah sure,” she blurted out but in fact she was wondering what this Mrs. Anderson would do if she slapped her in the face right now. What would her shock look like and would she even get angry or be timid? This was not a healthy thought. “I just need to get right back into wrestling.”
“Yes, and as I was saying, we are ready for that and Mr. Graves is very excited to be working with you again.” She packed up her papers and looked up at Kimitsu to start the dreaded small talk. “So what have you been up to since AWE closed?”
“Uhm, just hanging around my place relaxing for a change. I think I needed a break.”
Then she watched as Mrs. Anderson talked about vacations or some nonsense like that. Her mind drifted off into the time off. She had just won AWE’s Resilience and defended the Dynamic Tag Championships and they were the first major accomplishments in her young career. All the training and danger she put herself in were for that moment. She would celebrate with her gritty partner Uncle Aoki and her high class boyfriend Austin Gale for a whole week. After the nonstop partying it was time to face the reality of idleness and the dangers of anxious boredom.
In the past this is when people would get hurt. She would find some poor victim after school to torment and control until she felt satisfied. Now she had a rising name in the wrestling world and the only victims she could pick on were those that signed up for it. Aokigahara disappeared into a drug fueled bender she didn’t want to be a part of. So she would ride around without any destination in mind then either find a cheap motel to rest in or get Austin to collect her. His company and her motorcycle were the only things that seemed to keep her calm.
Otherwise it was a struggle to keep the urge for action down. She got hints of it in childhood but it wasn’t until her match with Pixie at New Year Zero that she acknowledged it for real. She liked the feeling of violence. She got a thrill every time she hurt and got hurt. Her trainer Tokyo Zombie sensed it and tried to manage it. When she was with Aokigahara he nurtured it and let her loose. He let her accept her true self. She was a beast and if her energies were directed at the right objectives then it was nothing to feel guilty about.
That was how she won the Resilience and Tag titles in AWE. That was how she was going to carry herself in Union Battleground. As Mrs. Anderson dribbled on about Disneyland and Medieval Times all Kimitsu could think about was her return from the vacation. She was no longer the nervous rookie playing out all the ways she could mess up her big debut in front of the fans in a new company. Her focus was on who would be the one she could step over to get ahead. It was time someone gave her a match.
NOW
The scene opens up in an abandoned and run down factory. The building stands gutted of the machines on the workfloor and the walls are covered with graffiti. Thunder rolls through with a loud rumbling in the distance. Suddenly two lines of motorcycles ride into the space. The riders have their faces covered with bandanas and goggles as they circle the camera. Finally the last rider comes into the circle and takes off their helmet and facemask. The other riders stop and face her letting their lights illuminate her space. Kimitsu Zombie stares into the camera as the last riders lull their engines into a hum.
“You all think you know what I am now so I won’t bother making any introductions. You’ve seen me in Union Battleground before stealing the whole damn show when Ketsuekigata Z faced the Outliers. At Battle of Los Angeles. We didn’t come out on top then but we fucking came out and put on a show. That was an exhibition match between friends. We beat each other up for a few laughs and some bragging rights. The important thing is that we had fun and that the fans had fun. Now things are a bit different.
“I return to Union Battleground a bit wiser and a lot less complacent. I come here to put my flag down and claim this place as mine. I come here to conquer this company or tear it down trying. Those that don’t know me yet can look me up. I leave a trail of ruins behind me as I climbed my way to the top and lay waste to anything and anyone in my way. BFW, PITT, EOW and now AWE are now crypts and tick marks on my wall. They are the unfortunate victims of my success and I claw my way to the top and topple whoever’s up there or tear the mountain down trying.
“I know it won’t be easy. Union Battleground has all manner of nasty, dangerous, violent, and very capable psychopaths ready to tear my head off but the thing about being young and stupid is that I don’t really know my limitations. The one thing I have over anyone else in this company is my limitless potential. I have a promise of violence in me that has been there since childhood. It has been nurtured by a warrior monk and honed by a sadomasochistic maniac. Get some shochu in me and I can get really wild. I’ve been just itching to get back in the ring and I’m going to take all that is yours and make it mine.
“Jonathan Drake will be the first example. He has all that he needs to be successful in this business. He has the body that’s all sculpted and ripped. Looks like he’s got the athletic ability from his school days and he’s probably real smart. He’ll probably use his height and weight advantage to beat me in our fight. It all seems just so perfect.
“There’s just one problem. He lacks that spark of tenacity that I have in me. This is a business built on a den of snakes. Jonathan Drake seems like the type to hover above the abyss and get his shots in while not getting dirty. He’s a competitor through and through. A real sportsman. Me? I dive right in and mix things up with any serpent that comes at me. I’ll drink their venom and spit back acid. I adapt and overcome. I am more vicious than Jonathan Drake and I will defeat him to show it.
“We do have one thing in common and that is our need for attention. My goal in all this and the goal of any Zombie is to grow our followers. We want all eyes on us and away from any negative influences. We do that with our unique fighting abilities and with our success. Jonathan Drake wants a pat on the back and a handshake when he fights while I want to infect everyone’s mind with the Zombie fucking virus. I built a following of all types of people and I’m sure they’ll follow me here to see me dominate another organization. The only question left is if Union Battleground can survive me.”
She holds her arms out and the people on the motorcycles rev their engines and flash their lights. We fade out the shot loses focus on the noise, the lights, and the illuminated figure of Kimitsu Zombie in the middle of it all.
