Kimitsu spreads her fingers out then makes a tight fist to get the ache out of her hands. Her knuckles look as red as they could be without bleeding. She looks around the late night subway car to make sure no one else is watching. This late at night there are only seven other people in there with her: two bums sleeping at the other end, two security guards going home engrossed in their phones and trying to ignore two drunk revelers talking loudly. The other person sits in front of her and is with Union Battleground. They got some footage of her training for the website and social media accounts and now they want some words. This is the perfect setting for it. The trip through Manhattan to the Bronx is long and she has some polite privacy.
Kimitsu leans back as the cameraman sets up the shot. She probably looks like shit after spending all day either running, lifting or sparring. She got used to looking her best. She just finished a big media round up after her signing with 4CW. That coupled with celebrating her win at Lights Out 11 made her lazy. To say she needed to work out a bit was an understatement. The cameraman motions for her to start and she runs a hand through her hair looks at the other passengers in their own little worlds. When she looks back into the camera she was in her own.
“There’s something funny about wrestling with another human. In your random street fight there’s a burst of passion it’s all a mess and chaotic. Right before the first punch is thrown you think ‘Oh my God this is going to happen. Fuck!’ Your brain is in panic mode the whole time and your body shoots adrenaline into you to try and help you cope. When you fight a lot and fight professionally there is none of that right before a fight. You should know exactly what you’re getting into and you should be prepared. There should be no chaos and no panic. There’s a sense of calm you feel when you’re just about ready to enter a fight. You know that you got your training in and your mind should be just… blank.”
She spreads her hands out as she says the last words and catches sight of her red and swollen knuckles again. This time she shows them off.
“I’m not really there yet for my next few matches. My time in Union Battleground when fighting for you guys full time has been great. Jonathan Drake was a statement I needed to make. The match with Mandi Morrison and Cheyenne Walker was a personal lesson from me to them. I’ll be watching their match closely to see if it stuck. Since then I’ve been handed opportunities after opportunities. I signed with 4CW, the big fed that some say has the best talent around. I face a monster of a man in Redd Thunder as my first match there. In UB I’ll be main eventing Lights Out 12 against Jove Belane. Now I don’t know why these people have this much confidence in me but I’m starting to think sometimes they may be right.”
She smiles wide and gets a distant look in her eyes, watching in the direction of the drunks who are now necking. She looks back and points at her head.
“It used to be that my mind was always static. I ran around like a komodo dragon and spewed venom at anything that was in my way. There was a storm in my mind when I fought. Sometimes this would consume me and I found myself on top of some poor boy or girl after having clawed a chunk out of their cheek. It was like that when I started, too. I remember my first few solo matches. There was a series with a man named Loh Elenas. Best of three. It ended with him injured so there wasn’t really a conclusion. Now I can finish matches properly. That calm comes and I just resort to my skills and my training… Most of the time, anyway. My opponent for my next Union match seems to be in this state of calm all the time.”
She shrugs and smiles as the drunk couple get loud and angry with each other again and the other passengers walk out of the car when it stops. Kimitsu motions for the cameraman to stay like the bums are.
“Um, That Harvey Lohman, the weasel looking fuck, has found a real gem. Jove Belane seems to be ready. Always. That fucking name, huh? Anyway I saw it in his first match here with Azrael. Always focused. Always at ease. He’s like a natural. We all know the outcome. Jove fucking kicked that guy back into PTSD. I also saw it when I used the Battleground Network,” she winks, “to see his fight in Unleashed. Finished the other poor guy in half a minute. That is where Jove Belane is strong. He has the fighting instincts in him. Either it was ingrained in him through training, or he has a natural gift, fuck if I know, but Jove is something special. Wrestling, or mma, he is more than ready to fight. He lives in fight mode. A person that can see that in him should be shit scared. How can they beat someone like that? A regular fucking demon of a man that always has a foot in hell? I’ll tell you how.”
The two clubbers get closer now as they argued about couple problems. Kimitsu laughs and tries to continue.
“This focus is singular. When the whole world is a threat you lose sight of other things. It’s missing the forest for the tree, as they say. It makes you tough but it makes you dumb. I wonder if that’s how Lohman picks ‘em. Jove Belane strikes me as the type of guy that would thrive in one of those old wars where people fought with swords and shields. That chaos wouldn’t affect him one bit. He would slash and maul his way to victory before eventually and inevitably losing the battle because he didn’t notice he was getting flanked. Look at his match with Dillon Shaw and that simple fuck, Hubert Smalls. Jove looked a fool when he got taken out of the ring. What I saw was the surprise on his face. This was one of the rare moments of clarity where he saw the big picture-”
She stops when the couple get into the shot with the woman pushing the man back and yelling something unintelligible. Kimitsu gives us an apologetic shrug and gets up. The shot is covered and some muffled noise is heard until we cut away. When he cut back Kimitsu is sitting in the same seat with a well dressed man next to her. His head is on her shoulder. The woman lies on the other side with her head on Kimitsu’s lap. Kimitsu absentmindedly plays with the woman’s red hair and waits for the doors to close and the train to move on.
“Sorry about that. That’s the subway for ya. Anyway if you think I’m wrong about Jove Belane you can fuck off. I know what he’s like because I know what it takes to go there. I know how hard it is to maintain it no matter how many fights you have. I know I can’t have that kind of focus.”
She looks at her knuckles again clutching a knot of the woman’s hair and doesn’t look up at us.
“Today I beat the shit out of my sparring partner real bad. She was a boxer and I couldn’t get a hold of her. She was too quick, I was tired… I was frustrated. When I did get her I didn’t let go and just didn’t want the bitch to get back up again. I kept punching.”
She finally looks up.
“I hope she’s-
"I’m not going to be able to reach the calm Jove Belane has when we wrestle each other. I know I’m going to lose control when he brings his Bruce Lee bullshit at me. Hell I might not even try. I’ll just let the fury take me this time and ride it until it breaks one of us. I’ll win because he is going to make a mistake. He is going to be in his tunnel of calm while I bring down a mountain on him. I’ll win because I understand his shortcomings and mine. I’ll win because I accept them and I will use them. If we both lose control we’ll be in my element and he’ll be done. Jove Belane has what it takes to be a great fighter but he doesn’t have what it takes to beat me.”
Kimitsu nods with a tired smile as she looks back on the calmed couple resting on her and we fade.
