The scene fades in, and there is no preamble. No, this week we're greeted by the sight of Danny Colt sitting on a simple black leather sofa, arms resting on his thighs and hands clenched together. Softly rubbing his palms together for a moment, Danny finally raises his head to see the red light is on and looks up and past it, as the soft voice of Sarah Colt can be heard.
"Danny, are you sure about this?"
"Yeah baby. I got this. I....I need to focus. And if I look up and I see you, it might throw me off. If I'm going to do this right, I need to be alone for it."
"Okay, well, I'll be outside when you're done. I Love You."
The sounds of footsteps getting further away can be heard, and its soon followed by a door opening and then closing. Danny stares at the door for a moment and then his gaze flickers back to the camera. Danny just stares for a moment and then he starts to speak, softly but assuredly.
"So, this week.....this week is the first big match of my career. This week is the week where I get my first chance at gold. At Lights Out, I step inside that ring and go toe-to-toe against Kimitsu Zombie for her War Horse title. Now, the War Horse title is fairly new. It was only brought in a few weeks back, and yet since the very first day Kimitsu has had a death grip on it. And for that, I do respect her. Because Union Battleground is not for the weak of heart, and if you're going to hold a title here, then you need to be at the top of your game. And in that regard, Kimitsu is. She is firing on all cylinders, and showing up every week ready to fight and defend her title. So I do respect Kimitsu. And I respect her reign as War Horse Champion."
“And yet, this week, I want you to know Kimitsu....I'm coming for that title. I'm coming for you. I may be a rookie. I might still be wet behind the ears, and trying to perfect my skills, but don't take me lightly. This business.....the wrestling business is the home of the unpredictable. Home of the unexpected. And while you may be champion now, while you may carry that gold proudly right now, all I need is three seconds to end your reign. Three seconds of chance, or fate, or pure skill. Just....three....seconds.”
Danny stares at the camera for a moment and then looks back down. He takes a moment to catch his breath and gather his thoughts. This is a big moment for the rookie and he knows it. Slowly his head raises again and his tongue flicks out over his lips to wet them and try to hide his nerves, before he chuckles softly.
"You know....its funny how quickly the goalposts shift in this business. Last Lights Out, all I wanted to do was go out in that ring and tear the house down with Rhyann. Win or Lose, all I wanted was to put on the best match I possibly could. And I did just that. I gave Rhyann my best, and I walked out with my hand raised. And I was proud of that. And then, I saw this weeks match card. And I realised, it wasn't just myself that was proud of my efforts. It was the front office and the fans as well. And I went from just wanting to have the best match possible.....to wanting to call myself a Champion.”
Danny looks away for a moment and he seems to stare off camera as he speaks wistfully.
"Danny Colt, War Horse Champion. It has a nice ring to it.”
Danny keeps staring for a moment but then he shakes his head and his gaze shifts back to the camera.
"But I know.....its not enough to just wish for it. To dream about it. If I want your title Kimitsu, I don't just need to bring my best. I need to be even better then that. I need to be willing to give up my blood, my sweat, and my soul. I need to reach deep down inside myself, find every last ounce of effort I have, and I need to bring it this week. Because don't get me wrong, I'm distracted by the gold. I'll admit it. Thinking of that gold does distract me, but it doesn't blind me to what I'm going up against. I know how good you are, Kimitsu. I know who trained you, and I know that that title means everything to you. And if I'm going to be the one to take it off you, then it's going to take a herculean effort.”
“But I can do it. And not just because of luck, or fate, or the Discworld Laws of the one in a million shot. No. I can do it, because I'm ready for it. Ready for you. Ready for everything you've got. See, the upside to being a rookie? You've only had a few chances to see me wrestle. Only had a few shots to see what I can do. But I've got plenty of footage of you. Plenty of tape to watch. Plenty of moves to plan for. Plenty of patterns to prepare against. I've seen everything you can do. I've watched, and studied, and spent every moment of these past two weeks going over this match in my head again and again and again.”
Danny suddenly springs upto his feet, and he briefly shifts out of view, but then he is pushing aside the sofa and staring at the lens. Holding out his hands, his fingers shaking a little as he takes a deep breath and breathes out slowly.
"You see this, Kimitsu? You see these fingers? These trembling digits. Thats not nerves. Thats excitement. Thats adrenaline. Because I am PUMPED. I am READY. Sarah....I didn't send her out because I was going to get mean and nasty or ANYTHING like that. I sent her out because I can tell she's worried about me. And everytime I see her looking at me with those big beautiful eyes....I can feel her worry. I can see her fears. She's wondering if maybe I'm in too deep. And I know that the best way to ease her concerns is to just calm down. To take some deep breaths, bottle this up, and save it for Lights Out.....”
“But I can't do it. I WON'T do it. Because this rush....this buzzing....this is my body telling me its ready for this. This is my mind sending me signals to make sure I'm ready for this. This is the biggest match of my career by far. And I'm not just ready for it. I'm genuinely bursting at the seams to get this match going.”
Danny suddenly steps forward, hands raising to run through his hair and he chuckles as he looks at the camera, moving closer and then slipping to his knees so his face is an inch from it. Breathing hard he can't stop smiling as he giggles a little.
"I can't keep this feeling forever, I know that. But think back....think back to the very first time you had a title shot. Think back to those nerves, and that adrenaline and that pure excitement that you had. That ran through your veins...and then realise that all those sensations....thats what I'm feeling right now. Thats what has me buzzing right now. I can't sleep. I can barely eat. I can barely train. Because every passing moment, all I can think of is you. Is of that gold. And I can't bottle this feeling. I know, at some point I'll be as jaded a figure as anyone else. I'll hear I'm in a title match, and I'll just shrug and think 'Just another day' and move on with my business. But today is not that day.”
“This match can't come soon enough. Lights Out can't come soon enough. Because at Lights Out, I am going to put my name in the history books. I am going to become a champion. I just....just close your eyes, Kimitsu. Close your eyes for a moment.”
Danny does as he says, and leans forward to rest his face an inch from the lens, his voice a whisper but still picked up clearly.
"Think of that final bell ringing. Of my hand being raised. And of that announcer standing up and saying it loud. YOUR WINNER AND NEEEEEEEEEW War Horse Champion, Danny Colt!”
Danny takes a final deep breath and shudders. He kneels with his eyes closed for a few moments and then slowly opens them to look into the camera.
"That's the future Kimitsu. That's how Lights Out will go. And its just....so.....beautiful.”
And with that the scene cuts out on that big grin stretching the lips of Danny Colt.

The balisong opens and closes as Kimitsu Zombie paces the bedroom twirling the knife in her hand. Her bag is packed and the War Horse Champion sits on top of it. She looks out of the window and back inside as her pets come inside the room. She picks them up and sits on the bed. She sets them down and collects her thoughts as she watches her pets, a little older than being a puppy and kitten, move around the bed. The knife twirls in and out. She looks up into the camera with a smile.
“So. Things are looking up for me Union Battleground. Kind of. See, I am exactly where I need to be. I have proven that the War Horse Championship is mine and that it is what will ultimately decide who gets to face the Trench War Champion. I am the sole contender now and I keep proving it again and again. Last time it was against Joe Stanton. He’s nothing to shake your head at but I had to at least roll my eyes. Being more experienced doesn’t mean shit.
“Now I’m about to go to London to defend my title one more time against Danny Colt. The only gripe I got about beating him is that it doesn’t lead to Emery Layton anymore. She got out played by some fuck that managed to get the jump on her again. This time it was for keeps and Rogan McLean… it’s on you now. I fucking hope that you keep that title too because I have to get something out of this. I need some satisfaction when I win the Trench War Title and if it can’t be Emery Layton, then it has to be the man that beat her. You might think you are on top of the world now, but recognize what you have inherited. That’s me around the corner ready to take my shot when I find that opening….”
Kimitsu sighs and relaxes as she picks up her cat and dog to display them for the camera.
“It’s not the time for that. I have to say goodbye to my loves here. Going away again, you guys. I think they know since it’s become a pattern. That’s the job I guess. Some people gave me these so I named them after the previous owners. This is Lauren Catwolfe. My friend was taking a break and became a cat lady for a while. This is one of her extras. This guy is Jett Jr. The guy’s girlfriend gave him to me after Jett Wilder cheated on her. He’s an asshole, but that isn’t this thing’s fault is it? Oh don’t start yelping, I’ll be back soon. I just have to kick Danny Colt’s country ass and I’ll be back!”
She sets the cat down on the bed and holds the dog up and looks into the camera. The knife twirls out.
“When do you think animals learn to kill, Danny? Does a cat need to see its mom chase a mouse to know that she can eat it? Does a puppy need to see a pack take apart a stray cat to know it can do the same? Is it in them all along?”
Kimitsu waves the knife over the cat and it becomes alert and follows it in the air ready to pounce.
“It is in them all along just like the will to kill is in us all along. We’re just animals too, Danny. We want the same things. So when I see you in your little blog acting like a damn fool it just pisses me off. You’re playing off a lie and you need to wake up from this. Do you think that either of your two opponents so far gave a damn about you wanting to compete with them? They didn’t care about your wife, or your smile, or your God damned need to be liked by everyone. No… they wanted to go in there and embarrass you. They wanted to get in that ring with you and dominate, brutalize, and hurt you. They didn’t want there to be a shadow of a doubt that they were better than you. Yes, even fucking Rhyan Matthews.
“See you’re new so you’re going to have to realize something. This isn’t some dog park where we just go to waste our energy and tumble around with each other. This competition is a fucking fight and we’re there to put each other down, and if we’re lucky we can take ourselves back home completely intact. You need a killer instinct to survive all of this so don’t come at me with your good natured smile and puppy dog eyes to shake my hand in that ring. I can’t respect you if you’re just going to compete. That soft attitude doesn’t last long in this business so I’m giving you some advice. You need to harbor some hate inside of you and let it out. You don’t need to shout about it every five minutes, but c’mon get pissed off or something. Does it bother you that Anton is getting a shot at the Trench War TItle and you get to fight me? Isn’t that just a fucking slap in the face to you? If Anton wins-”
Kimitsu suddenly grabs the dog by the scruff of the neck and holds the knife out towards it.
“I know you are a brave spirit not to let the evils of the world get to you, but it doesn’t matter if you think the bad in the world won’t affect you. It always comes for you, Danny. It’s coming for you now in the form of the War Horse Champion. I’m going to prove to the people that they were right. Danny Colt does not deserve a shot at the Trench War Championship. He is not up for the test. I’m going to kill that little piece of you that looks at your wife with the starry eyes and believes that a good attitude can get you through anything. I have the strength to see things for what they are and survive them. I am taking a huge step down facing you. This fucking insults me and you, Danny, are going to have to answer for that. I will maim you and I am going to make you cry out. I am going to show you what ugliness there is in this business. No amount of hard work can prepare you for me.”
She puts the dog down and hugs it. She closes the knife.
“This is a blessing for you. Really. I hope that after this match you grow the fuck up and see things like I do. It is a little gray and cloudy but you’ll be able to hold your head up and start anew. You’ll be a changed man, Danny. But all the better for it when you know your place. It’s just a loss. You’ll survive.”
