You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
“The world was on fire and no one could save you but him.”
The familiarity of Viduus Morta’s voice sent chills down our spines. He did not speak much but when he did everyone’s ears perked up to listen carefully. His words hung in the air as the darkness began to fade illuminating an enormous, ornate mirror. The reflection of the Speaker stared back at himself as Viduus stood in the background staring through the mirror. There was nothing else in the room other than this mirror and the two men.
“It is a strange thing what desire will do.”
The Speaker gave a smart smile realizing what he did with the two sentences. The two men never claimed to be versed in pop culture but clearly the theme of “Wicked Game” was present in the first two sentences the men spoke.
“Viduus never intended to be defending the Battalion championships against one of the best tag teams in the world today but we find ourselves dreaming of the potential greatness that awaited if He could have been victorious. A wicked game to play to dream of such things but it was he and Aiden Deimos together who gave the Outliers their first loss in a year. Foolish to thing such a team could be defeated by one man even if that man is Viduus Morta. He overcame a 3 man gauntlet to retain his 4CW Pride Championship and a few nights after took the Outliers to the limit almost defending the UB Battalion titles as well…and now?”
The Speaker raised the inflection of his voice at his question.
“Now, Alexander Devin, Mr. Winless believes that he can stand toe to toe with the Blood King? He believes he can go one on one with 4CW’s Pride Champion, former Extreme Champion, former Battalion Champion? Alexander Devin doesn’t even know which way is up and yet at the end of Lights Out he will remember being put down. You believe yourself to be separate from the masses yet everytime you show your face you are in the presence of the normal. You are stuffing your face at a restaurant surrounded by those you claim to know better than. You are indulging yourself at a bar alongside the people you claim to be better than. Are you better though? Perhaps you’re actually one and the same.”
The mirror seemed to shake, not the mirror itself but the image it held within.
“What do you see Alex?”
The Speaker’s image did indeed become slightly distorted.
“You claim yourself to see the world differently. You see things in your own way, deeper than what most see.”
The image of the Speaker changed to an image of Alexander even though The Speaker remained motionless in front of the mirror.
“How many times have we heard that someone sees the world for more than what the normal, wretched human population does? How many must claim to have a higher knowledge than those around them? You see things the way you want to Alex. You spin your own tale, your own web of lies in order to get through your dull, mediocre and meaningless life. We, as in Salvation…..WE see things for exactly what they are…nothing more, nothing less.”
Five quick images of Alexander’s most recent losses flash in the mirror before returning to the reflection of the Speaker.
“You could never make it with Salvation because you never truly believed in yourself as evidenced by the lack of success you have. You are a man who claims to be above all other men but like others you are just lost, with no path. We gave you a path and you squandered it. You fell in love with the idea being accepted, being with others like you, helping to educate the masses. You fell in love with the companionship. I guess that was our wicked game to play…to make you dream, think and feel ways that you never felt before in your life. The truth is…it made you weak. You’re vulnerable. You’re broken.”
The snap of Viduus’ fingers echo throughout the empty room.
“Just like that.”
His whisper carried through the room as the mirror now ignited into flames.
“Your existence went up in smoke. You say you have moved on from Salvation, you told Zombie Salvation hindered you yet you cannot stop yourself from speaking as if you are still one of us. As if you belong with us. The only soul that is truly stained here is yours Alex. It is stained with the every present fecal that is your entire existence.”
Without warning or any cause the flames blew out and the mirror fell, quite visibly, into a pile of ashes. The ashes floated in the air like snowflakes until Viduus’ boot stomped on the pile spreading them across the black floor. He had his full outfit on completing it with the 4CW Pride Championship over his shoulder.
“Are you ready?”
Viduus gave one single nod before an image of a father and child dripped down only allowing for a narration from the Speaker and Viduus.
“I present to you a future Alexander Devin.”
The father and son were busy playing catch when the child actually dropped the baseball. His father became extremely red in the face and began to scream at the child irately.
“Just another hipster, emo kid verbally and possibly physically abused by his child claiming to know more about life due to all the years of his father telling him how stupid the child’s decisions were, how he will never amount to anything in this world. This child will build himself up into being able to “see” more than anyone else. He will take on a persona that isn’t true to his self and it will eat him alive.”
A high school football game unfolded before our eyes. A father was cheering gleefully as his quarterback son was leading his team to a come from behind victory. He needed to complete just one pass in the endzone but instead threw an interception directly to the other team leading to a touchdown and the game ending.
“This young man, so badly, wanted to impress his father but when the time came to do so he failed. He couldn’t do it. He didn’t know how to. That was you in Salvation Alex. You wanted to impress Nemesis but you couldn’t. You just didn’t have the skill. You didn’t have the know how. You choked anytime the game was on the line. You still do and you still will. This is your chance to shine against one of the best this industry has to offer so what will you do? You will fold under the pressure. He has beaten the likes of Dick Devereux while you have wallowed in a pit of failure.”
A flash of darkness takes us back to just the face of Viduus Morta.
“You could have escaped this Alex. You could have won. Now you will die the hero while we live eternally cast proudly as the villains. Alexander Devin…this is your last ride.”
A cackling laugh from Viduus haunts the ears of every man, woman, and child listening as we fade to black.
