BROKEN PROMISES on/off camera
Keep up the walls.
This was easier said than done. Which came kinda as a surprise because Elena DeDraca never had been a very open person. She knew how social interaction worked, but it was nothing she enjoyed. Of course it was part of her job. Which probably was another reason she limited it when it came to her private life. Having a kid changed a lot, but to a degree she was thankful that Isabella was rather picky with people surrounding her.
Like mother, like daughter.
Today was nothing different but the little voice inside her head annoyed her till she reached the breaking point. Mostly because it made her feel like a hypocrite. She judged someone for failures of the past, when she had made enough herself. But even though she knew that, the feelings towards this meeting were still mixed.
She had been sitting inside this small cafè for the past fifteen minutes, her eyes almost set at the door. Whenever she heard the gentle ring of the bell her heart was skipping a beat. It was easy to hate on someone you never met. Despise someone that gave you away, making you feel like you didn’t mean shit to them. But what if that was not only half the truth?
Nobody is perfect.
She had just looked back on the table when a shadow fell over her. It was not necessary to look up, so she didn’t. Instead she waited for the other person to sit down, hearing her take a deep breath. Her mother. Margaret Edwards.
“Hello, Margaret.”
As every other time she saw the disappointed look on her face. But there was no way she could call her anything else. Even though she had tried. Numerous times.
“Thank you for agreeing to meet me, Elena. There is so much I wanna tell you, so much I wanna fix.” She tried a soft smile. “Things didn’t go the right way when we parted last time, and I know this is my fault… .”
“Stop right there. This is not why I came, Margaret. I don’t wanna chew on the past another time -- getting only half the story. You made a mistake with Finn’s father and I was the result of it.” The voice was serious, almost cold. “I have spent enough time in my life feeling angry at the world. And I just recently realised that there are different sorts of anger. There is the one that keeps you going -- the one that has been my companion for the past 29 years. But then there is also the one that keeps you grieving and drains you on the inside.”
Her mother seemed tempted to interrupt her, but knew better. Elena was pouring some sugar in her tea, clinging her spoon against the porcelain.
“I got no more energy for this. Being angry at the people in my life. I know you meant well back then, but you gotta understand one thing. I am a mother myself. I know how that feels. I see the look on Isabella's face and know one thing. She would rather live in a cheap apartment with me, eating rice and noodles every day -- instead of being left behind. You can’t fix that. Ever. And that is why I agreed to this meeting. So many people in my life broke me in so many ways and it started when I was just a day old… .”
“I wish I… .”
“Don’t wish. Wishing means nothing. Start to act. I can sit here and forgive you, Margaret. I can forgive Cyrus too and everyone else. But if I do that, then I do that for myself. Not so either of you feels better. There is nothing like being the better person about this. But I look at my life and I know that I have a responsibility for my daughter. And I don’t want her to be cursed with a broken mother. She deserves better.”
When saying those last words she looked directly at the woman in front of her. Elena didn’t show any kind of emotion, but for the first time she felt as if her mother understood. Looking through her bag the Fist of Hydra put some money on the table before getting up. She had started to walk but stopped right next to her mother, looking down.
“I forgive you, Margaret.”

There was nothing pretty about going to war. And those that did knew that there was never a real winner. With every battle you lost a little bit of yourself. How ironic that she was the one holding the War Horse Championship, right?
Little schizophrenic, Elena.
She couldn’t even argue with herself about this. Then again she had been in this business for a long time. Seeing people come and go, trying to survive. Those that couldn’t find the fine line between in the ring and out of it hardly remained successful. So maybe in the end they were all a little psychotic -- some just knew how to hide it.
Elena blinked a few times when returning to reality. She was looking around not quite sure where she was. Even less how she got here in the first place. The coffee in her hand was ice cold and people stared at her. Okay. That was nothing new. But this time the reason probably was a different one. On the concrete floor between her legs rested a plastic bag, filled with all kind of luchador masks.
“Awe. Yeah.”
She took one out looking at it from every angle. In an almost gentle manner she put it back in the bag.
“Don’t you all love unexpected shopping trips? And before we go down to business -- I by no means disrespect the luchador movement. I think they do amazing things inside the ring and I love their costumes. Yes, I call them costumes. Not wrestling gear. I have been down to Mexico when I was way younger and I admit that I was fascinated. The way those guys and girls caught the crowd was hard to ignore. But like every other time I will be a party pooper. I hope you didn’t expect anything else, folks.”
Elena took a sip from her drink while looking around. She was still sitting in front of the toy and party shop where she bought those masks.
“I am no damn monkey in the circus. I don’t do tricks to get cheered on. I am a wrestler and fighter. Of course we are labeled as entertainers -- but we decide ourselves what we offer. El Landerson. You made a decision and I can respect that. But with that respect comes an obligation for you too. You gotta live up to what you made yourself. Just like I have to fulfill the goals I have created for myself. I didn’t come into this business to be an attraction. Every time I enter this ring I try to give it my best. I admit that my tactics aren’t always easy to understand or very graceful, but they are effective. And isn’t that what matters in the end?”
She got more comfortable on that bench when putting her legs up. Looking down at her worn out boots with a smile.
“You know what they say: I didn’t come this far, to only come this far. They used to tell me that I couldn’t do this and that, but every single time I proved them wrong. I am a force to be reckoned with at any time. Do you believe for a second your confidence will change how I view myself? Or that it matters when people try to belittle me going as far as calling me mediocre? Ask every person that ever stepped in a ring with me if that is the case. I am not good at talking myself down just for someone else to feel better. You might be good, but that doesn’t mean you are good enough. Isn’t that hard to understand, huh? I have matched up with some of the best. And here I am still doing my thing. And I say my thing cause I will never change the way I do business -- not for you or any company.”
For a moment nothing happened till she shrugged her shoulders, rolling her eyes.
“I don’t expect you to understand that. Maybe you are used to jump up and down for a treat -- but I earn my shit. Not everyone has to love me. Not everyone has to know who I am. But one thing for sure, Landy: If you step in a ring with me, you better come prepared. There are no second chances. You are welcome.”
