“One step forward. Two steps back. After marching the way I did in my debut, this seems bittersweet and like a failure. At least to the untrained eye. But the honest truth is, my first two matches in Union Battleground were successes. Just, in different ways.”
Johanna’s hands clasp together. Her long hair pulled back behind a black and red headband. Her face natural, no makeup, no face paint. Just her regular skin tone. Pale with a hint of pink on her lips. She twists her facial expression into one of arrogance. Her slight German accent shining through as she leans forward bringing her hands to her chin.
“In my debut match, at crown of the king cobra, I went into the ring an unknown, someone who the fans had never seen, never heard of, unless they really paid attention to the European indy scene. But, as the match went on I heard the voices of the masses come around. They went from indifferent silence to hushed whispers, to a roaring inferno of admiration and acknowledgment. They saw me as a threat, as someone of the future who could fit in well. And apparently, Saul, Gunnar and other members of the backstage world looked at me and agreed.”
“They saw the future of Union.”
“They saw a small woman who wasn’t afraid of blood and pain.”
“They saw Johanna Krieger….”
“But what to do with me?. Where were they to put me on the next card?. Should they feed me someone of a lower standing?. Bring in someone new for a debut?. Or do they really test me?. Give me an opportunity and throw me in the deep end and see if I can swim?. Well, I think we can see what they decided to do. They took me, strapped pair of cinderblocks to my feet, and threw me in the water.”
Johanna leans back with that grin still on her face, showing her perfect white teeth in a snarl, her bright blue eyes shining as she tilted her head to the side. Her hands move down to rest on her hips as she let out a deep sigh.
“And to some people, I drowned. To some people. I failed. But let me ask you. Who else comes into a company, a company that has seen someone rise to each challenge and become a two-time champion, and leave that person who scars and pain the likes of which they have never felt?. I went out there, to that ring with a woman who is well known for being vicious and hard-hitting, a woman who is a champion here and has been one in 4CW, and not only did I hold my own, I took a chunk of Kimitsu with me.”
Johanna reaches into her pocket and pulls out a handful of hair with some dried blood. Obviously taken from the match with Kimitsu when she tied the champion to the ropes. She lets out a laugh and shakes her head before setting the bloodstained strands of hair down.
“I went at her with everything I had and the fans saw it, the fans could feel it and in the end, she and I stood as equals. In everything except the fucking result. See while I took part of her with me, part of her blood, part of her body and part of her soul she was able to escape with her championship. A championship that if I ever get another shot at is coming home with me. But to earn that right, to kick that all into gear I have to keep climbing the Union ladder. And to do that, I have to win and next up at Lights out 33 I take on “The Iconic Prince” himself...Maverick…”
“Well gee whiz...where’s Goose and why can’t I hear danger zone by Kenny Loggins?.”
“I know, dated 80’s reference.”
“Thing is Maverick, you’ve been signed to Union for a few months now. Hell, you had a match back at Relapse 2, you went at it against Dred-King and Raab and were able to get the win, good work. But since then, since that great night where you were able to make an impact what have you don in Union buddy?. You got your ass kicked by Datura and then took a nice seat on the bench while much more talented people stayed in the spotlight.”
“You had a shot Maverick…”
“A real shot…”
“You gained entry into the Crown of the king cobra, you could have used that to stake your claim at being a prince, but in the end, you got beaten so quickly that we can’t even call you a pauper. While you sat in your ass at the supercard, I was making my debut. While you were losing a tag team match to Fallon and Josh Kennedy, I was going to war with someone who would have eaten you alive. But what happened Maverick?...where were you?...”
She pauses for a moment and smirks before pushing up to her feet, her upper body covered in a black sleeveless top brandishing the logo of the comic book character the Punisher.
“You came in, made an impact, earned a spot, lost it and then sat around. In wrestling you need to be current, you need to be ready at a moments notice and keep your name out there but for a string of shows, there was nothing. You didn’t speak to the fans, you didn’t appear on the shows, you didn’t do a damn thing. Because you’re lazy. I have appeared on three shows in a row, more than you have. I introduced myself to the crowd, I won my debut and I have become a bigger name here with minimal effort even though you could have become a star…”
“But no, instead you want to make half-assed appearances her while representing AWF along with Kira. Oh yes Maverick, I know all about AWF. Bethesda is a shithole, run by an idiot and enjoying low rent wannabe status with people like Michael Gregory Kahn as “stars”..”
“Alex Jones, the man who trained me, the head honcho at Wolfslair spent years kicking the owners and stars of AWF around like nothing, and here you come waltzing into Union stinking up the joint..”
“That’s not ho0w it works…”
“That’s not wrestling the way I know it…”
“See this business is all about effort and reward. It’s ok to lose a match as long as you go down fighting and come back to keep your name out there. But you?. You lost and got kicked out of the Crown of the king cobra, you lost your return match and now here you are ready to lace up against me. And I want you to ask yourself, Mr. Prince, can you really beat me?. You’ve seen what I can do here, and if you look at other companies you’ll know just how dangerous I am, can you step foot in that ring and go one on one with me and not end up broken, beaten and bloody?...”
She chuckles to herself and paces back and forth.
“When you lose, there are two ways to react. You either pack everything up in your brain, sit down and mope about it, just disappear and stop caring about what you do in this business and in the ring, or you can use it. See that loss to Kimitsu, some people think it exposed me, it showed I’m not quite ready for the bigger challenges, for the names that are known around the world. But I know the truth, I know how I;m going to react and it doesn’t look good for you. The best way to rebound after a loss is to go out there and destroy the first person you see and unfortunately for you…”
“You’re the first person I see…”
“You’re the bait, the meal...the toy I get to chew on…”
“I don’t know what Union has against you Maverick but when I get down to that ring, when I step between those ropes this will all be about sending a message. It will be about vindication, retribution, and anger. It will be about destruction and pain. When the dust settles Maverick, you’ll be laying on the mat, staring at the lights, wondering why you even agreed to this match. And I will be able to walk away knowing that I am still the future...and I will be a champion soon enough…”
She nods and scoffs as she turns away from the camera, the scene fading.
