Kimitsu Zombie comes out of a wooded area by a beach. The shot is beautiful as she crouches down feeling the grass with her bare feet just before the land turns to sand. A calm ocean spans before her and the sounds of the forest surround her in a blissful scene. She looks out at the horizon and procures a flask from a pocket in her jacket and waves it at the camera.
“So from what you’ve seen out of me lately is that I’ve been out off the grid. I’ve been relaxing on a paradise island with my girlfriends celebrating love and friendship. It’s been great to get away from it all and enjoy yourself for once. There is only one thing missing but I have found it here. Sometimes nature can surprise you. There is a lot of beauty that can be found if you just look even with my cynical eyes. It takes some getting used to but you can never be too comfortable can you?
I’ve been here living almost in blissful ignorance. I have pushed the thoughts of the world I left behind but I am not going to be here forever. You adapt but you can never forget what’s ahead. I know my duty and I will deliver. I leave for civilization soon and the realization of what’s ahead of me becomes more real with every passing second. I have been a castaway and I see the boat coming from the horizon to take me back. I welcome it with open arms because I love the trouble it will bring. Soon I am going to face one of the biggest challenges to my Trench War Championship to date. I’ve dispatched every challenger to this title. I’ve shown that I can take out almost everybody put in front of me. Last week it was Kreiger. She gave me a worthy challenge and now I am facing off against three others in a gauntlet match. These men are bigger and stronger than me and I am nervous as fuck…”
Kimitsu burst out laughing uncontrollably.
“I’m just playing, guys. I’m going into this gauntlet match with full confidence that I am going to beat these odds. I don’t need to talk in riddles or try to hide my hand with any magic tricks. I’m as raw as you’ll get so let’s take a look at these guys.
“First, we have that clown Karnivall. This man is a trip, isn’t he? He comes out straight out of an eighties horror movie about some freaky clown ready to smash, rip, and tear his opposition to shreds. He has been in the ring a lot lately. Fuck the outcome of those matches, because anyone can win at any time especially in a gauntlet like this one. Karnivall is full of tricks meant to diffuse and distort the mind of his opponents and bring out the fear inside of ‘em. That’s some wild shit, right? He hasn’t gotten an opportunity like this one before. Sure Drell blew the cover off of his kookiness and Turner showed that he probably wouldn’t be shit without those tricks, but still… Karnivall uses what he has. I don’t think we’ve seen his full potential just yet and with a chance at my title, I think he will pull out all the stops and give me a show worthy of a fucking Ringling Brothers show jacked up to ten. I’m the big elephant in the room that he has to carve up and torture, only this time it will be encouraged. But just like that big professional circus, people are going to stop buying his shit the longer he goes on. We have all taken a look behind the curtain and we see Karnivall for what he really is. He is a violent sideshow without any substance but that is not why I hate him. He can be great.
“I hate him for what he has done to the clown. See, I fucking love clowns. I don’t know what it is with you people in the West but you just love taking wholesome symbols of joy and warping them for your own sick and twisted desires. Is it the drugs over here or something? How can someone be afraid of a damn clown. They’re hilarious! Well, that has given Karnivall the chance to play on that fear to hide his incompetence in the ring. Last time I said Union was ruled by the freaks but a clown just doesn’t fit that damn bill. Every single match of his has been a bloody affair but I’ve can swim in a whole pool of blood to defend my title. The thing is that I flat out refuse to be intimidated by a clown. That is against all my principles. The only thing a clown should be able to scare away is a frown. Adding the points to the makeup and the violence to the act just won’t do it for me. My mission when he steps into the ring is to fight for the sanctity of clowns everywhere! I’m not going to allow some wannabe Gacy tarnish that image and take away children’s joy any longer.”
Kimitsu shakes her head at the absurdity of being a protector of innocence for once.
“A fucking clown…”
She takes a drink from her flask and brushes her hair back with her hand.
“Now after I’ve been good and mad it will be the fat Flash Kennedy, Cletus Franklin. This guy came into Union Battleground with lots of promise. He talked a big game and spat out that good shit. He was full of promise with stars over his eyes dreaming of making an impact. He had some great things going for him being blessed with the size and strength that he has. Cletus had the drive but unfortunately, he doesn’t have the skill to use that wisely. I would blame the smoke, but I think that shit has been villanized enough. Cletus has just stepped into an environment that he is not used to. He found out real hard that it isn’t just all hype. This is a harsh place to make a name for yourself and he was shown real quick how far the mighty can fall. It’s not the man that is the problem, it’s the attitude. You just can’t come up to a place like this with a bunch of good wishes and a dream. The kind of competition that we have here will eat that spirit up and break that soul. You can see right when it happened to him in that match with Drell. It was just demoralizing. Maybe he didn’t anticipate such a challenge, but that vengeance that he promised after he lost just didn’t come and when faced with the genuine article in Flash Kennedy he was a lost cause.
“Now he steps into a bigger spotlight with me in this match. He gets a chance to straight up usurp the best champion this company has to offer now.”
Kimitsu takes her gaze off the horizon and looks directly into the camera.
“That’s right. I just said the Trench War Championship is the biggest championship this company has to offer. I’ve come to realize that, but that is a story for another time.”
She smirks and picks up some sand in her fist and lets some grains fall and fly off in the wind looking out at sea again.
“Do you know what my wish is? I wish that Cletus Franklin picks himself up from whatever smokeout he is in right now and shows me that he still wants this. I want him to come at me with the intention to make something of himself again… To show everyone that he isn’t just some fucking burnout that quits at the first sign of trouble. When I look him in the eyes I want him to meet my fucking gaze with the same promise that he showed Drell. This is the biggest chance he has at redemption so he better not look away and back down. If he does it will be more of the same. The problem here is that my wishes have a tendency to not come true. That has made me the bitter old hag that has gotten so used to disappointment that I lash out at the world and make it pay. Cletus Franklin will pay for not stepping up to me. Dearly. If he thinks Flash and Drell ruined him then he has no idea what I have in store for him if he doesn’t give me a challenge.”
Kimitsu shrugs and stands up. She puts her hand up to her eyes to shade her eyes from the sun as a gust of wind passes by to blow back her hair.
“Do you hear that? That was like… I don’t know, the winds of change. That brings me to the third man in this challenge for my title. We haven’t seen much of Brother Lavender in the ring except for when he was ravaged in the ring before he even got started. I am sure that was nothing short of disappointing, but let’s skip that. Maybe he was going to go in there against the killer carnie and show us all what a small chance and a whole lot of faith can do. Well that faith came crashing down with a little dose of reality, didn’t it?
“I will ignore that. I have to if I am to be ready for this match. This man is a mystery. The first time any of us saw him he was in that weird little commune of his preaching the word of his ‘Purple Magic.’ It seems there is a whole group out there of his followers ready to be let down by that preacher. I don’t know where these things pop up, but people like him serve to pull the wool over the weak’s eyes and convince them to follow. That is where I have a problem because that is my domain. I am part of a little group too. Maybe you’ve heard of the Zombies? We serve to influence people as well, but we do it by showing them the reality of things. I’m not a religious person, hell, I’m not even all that spiritual. My little role in this clan of mine is to inspire the vulnerable just like him. I aim to influence them by showing them the reality of things. My message is that the powerless really can rise up and take power for themselves. It won’t be through some message from a snake oil salesman confusing them. It’ll be through force and I show that every time I step into the ring in Union Battleground. I’ll be tired, sweaty and maybe even a little bloody but I’ll still show this con man how things work out in the real world.”
Kimitsu pauses as she spots a snake slithering close by out of a bush. She walks up slowly and looks around then places her hand in front of the snake's path. The long body of the yellow snake gets close and probes the air with its tongue. It goes over Kimitsu’s hand and slides cooly over it as Kimitsu doesn’t move. She waits until the snake passes over then grabs its tail and picks it up by the tail end. She secures the head with her other hand and stands up admiring the snake.
“See I know that all this here, this beautiful scene of nature can a bitch. There is danger everywhere and it doesn’t matter if you look for it or not. I’m not counting out any of these guys despite their lackluster careers here. Maybe this will be the time when my luck runs out. I’m facing three dangerous men that have everything to prove. Well, fuck them and their ambitions. I’m not going to back down. I aim to live up to this title and live up to its legacy. To enhance that legacy and really make it the most coveted prize in Union Battleground. This is the rebirth and a resurgence of the brutality I promised. This is the match to do it in. I’ll step into the chaos and break my back defending it. I’ll make these guys fall to rock bottom so they can ask themselves if they have what it takes to rise back up again. That is the only way someone really grows. There won’t be any tricks, or recklessness, or leaps of faith that will separate me from my title. Beauty can be deceiving, and when nature strikes and forces you to face reality, it will be as unrelenting as I am.”
Kimitsu looks directly into the head of the snake and squeezes her grip below it before looking back into the camera and lightly placing it back on the ground to continue on its way.
