“I believe he is close.”
Here lies our little Ghost of a heroine perusing over ancient text and scrolls trying to call out to the other world. Be it for guidance, longing, or just to see if she can, Fukushima Zombie watches the fires in the candles around the runes with concentration for any signs of his arrival.
“Arise, Tokyo. Arise.”
Yes, with a death mask painted on her face she tries to call on the spirit of her fallen savior back to the mortal realm after shuffling off this mortal coil. She lies alone during this ritual in the deep confines of the Zombie-gumi Temple hoping for some ethereal company other than myself until she hears some footsteps coming down the hall. Time to blow out the candles and wipe off the chalk off the floor. They’re here.
“I won’t hide.”
Aokigahara Zombie barges in the door and looks around ignoring the altar to Tokyo and the ritual display only focusing on the smell.
“What are we burning? What are you using? Are you holding out on me?”
Fukushima closes up her books and starts to burn out the candles.
“I’m not doing anything like that.”
Aokigahara looks a little disappointed but still suspicious when he notices all the books and scrolls around her.
“Then what are you doing?”
That is the question, isn’t it? Does she think she can tell him the truth? It seems that the world has moved on and given up on the old figurehead without question. But she hasn’t, has she?
“I have not forgotten him.”
Just look at him trying to piece this all together. As if she cannot be more obvious. Let’s see what he comes up with through that fragmented mind of his.
“What are we sacrificing?”
Oh! Maybe that is what she is missing. I did see a few stray cats when we were gathering materials earlier…”
“I don’t do that anymore. I was just calling him for a talk.”
Aokigahara picks up one of her old books and casually looks through the old illustrations on the pages while sitting on the bed at the side of the room.
“Why? You know it’s best to look forward instead of behind. Especially in this case.”
Fukushima blows out the last of the candles and turns on the light.
“I just wanted to speak to him for some guidance. We have an important match coming up. I wonder what he would have thought about how this came about.”
“Knowing him, he would have disapproved. That guy always acted to righteous. He never did like to have any real fun.”
Oh, there’s that look. Too much violence in the eyes. I would hide it if I was her before he notices. Oops too late.
Aokigahara freezes as if he was just caught in front of a wild animal on his path. He slowly puts the book to the side.
That was dumb. They’ll lock her up again. Oh, don’t look so surprised now!
“Don’t lock me up!”
Aokigahara grins at her shrugging while showing her his empty palms.
“You know I wouldn’t do that to you. Now relax. Just tell me what’s on your mind.”
Don’t tell him anything. He’ll just judge her as all the others do. Crazy little Fukushima with the voices in her head giving her all kinds of evil thoughts…”
“I can trust you.”
“Always.”
Always.
“I am just wondering if this is what he would have wanted. At what became the last Valor show we interrupted a clean contest of teams and attacked before it was over. It is the first time we did that. We always waited until the end if we did need to do anything. There wasn’t any provocation this time. It was just the Dead End Friends and the Hellcats. Nothing to do with us anymore.”
Aokigahara leans forward with his elbows on his knees.
“And what became of that?”
“Now we have this match against both of them.”
“That’s right. And didn’t he always used to say that the ends always justify the means.”
“Yes.”
“So this is…”
“The right thing.”
“Right. This is something that was building up since the very beginning. Kimitsu decided that it would be best not to wait. If Valor wanted to see the best of the best tag teams on that show then why not the Zombies?”
“We were occupied.”
“Kimitsu figured it an insult, I guess. You know how she can’t have that. Now we have the world’s attention and on her old stomping grounds. We’re going to find out who the best team is on this network once and for all. Well, at least for now. Aren’t you excited to be seeing that one again?”
He knows. And she tried to hide it before by pretending not to care.
“Lisa? I got over that.”
Maybe he has seen the altar with the hair?
Aokigahara motions her over to him. She sits in front of him hugging her knees.
“Don’t let go of that. It’s perfectly healthy. I mean she is one of the leading figures of our industry and this team she has now with Anastasia Hayden? Wow. What more can you ask for? They’ve done a lot to establish themselves as a team everywhere. Some of it over your very own back and mines. But since the change in leadership, we have had the same success as well in the leagues. You just beat your group leader claiming his prize, and I beat the Bryan Laughlin in mines. Hell, even before that we took our tag titles off the Hellcats. Granted, it was a different team, but their team nonetheless. Do you remember what it was that she told us before the match? How it was all about perception and that if you looked closely at us, that the world’s perception was faltering like one of those flames there when I opened the door? We showed her, right? That’s the thing with other people’s perceptions of you. It doesn’t really hold out.”
“What do you mean?”
Aokigahara spreads out his fingers in front of her eyes.
“Every person you know, or meet, or have a fleeting interaction with, or even make eye contact with on the street forms their own idea of you in their mind. By now, even in your young life, there are millions and millions of versions of yourself floating out there and none of them you. Do you know how many there are out there of me? Hell, I bet the people watching this would have thought that I would show up juggling knives on my ass or something like that. While I can twerk with the best of them, I can’t really control this reputation. Even the way we see ourselves is an illusion.”
He snaps his fingers right in front of her eyes surprising her a little bit.
“We know we popped this bubble a little bit with the HSDS when we won these titles. We changed their little narrative on us, but this time it is a different story. If Lisa with Anna were confident little spitfires, then Lisa with Anastasia are two rockets driving themselves into the heavens no matter what. They simply know that they are the best and there is nothing people can do to change that, is there?”
Aokigahra looks up in thought and gives Fukushima the side-eye when she fidgets trying to get her word in. He cocks his head to the side giving her the chance. So easily manipulated.
“Different versions for different people. I love- I like the attitude but it is flawed. I see them as the world-beaters they are, but nobody is perfect. That is what I wanted to show her when we beat them for our titles. I believe this is something Anastasia knows, but Lisa Seldon has her drunk in her spell. Their attitude is to absorb all the positives and reject the negative. This does not bring balance. Not even when they put that energy out into the world. This makes at least some of that talk bluster. I know the power of greatness. There are ebbs and flows. One cannot stay up forever, but when you rise you must make sure it is big. If this was Kimitsu’s intention then I will commit to her cause.”
So the mission is told and the course laid out. But does she know what she is getting into, the little bird? This is the war and there are others included in this. Let’s hope she remember that when she rose, she rose quickly. The fall is greater the higher you go. When a body falls from such a height the chance of recovery is low. The chance of decimation on impact is greater. Bloody little bits of gore that can’t be put back together again.
“I acknowledge the risks.”
Aokigahara kneels down to whisper at her a little excited.
“Do you really? It is one thing to hold a title and be the target of challenges, but what we did has a deeper effect. They won’t just be looking to humiliate us this time and prove us to be the failures they perceive us to be. We didn’t just go after the Hellcats and the Dead End Friends. We went after the very institution of tag team wrestling.on this platform. We were the only two that could do what we did since we are willing to go all the way. Siberia and Kowloon are good but their whole philosophy is about restrictions. Ours is about having no limits. That is why the Dead End Friends will see something new in our match.”
Fukushima looks back at her altar for Tokyo and the picture she has up of him.
“The Benny Stevens is an admirer of him just like I am. He has stated in the past that Tokyo gave him some guidance in the past. Now he is on his second or third chance back in the industry. Now with Zack they are a formidable force. They hoped to build the division in Valor before the close, but the powers that be went elsewhere. You were forgotten. Thrown away with the rubbish, lumped together with the fluff of a forgotten title.
Aokigahara flinches as Fukushima slaps her own head.
“It’s alright. They did well. In their rise to the Chimera Tag Titles, they ousted the team of NSFW proving that they were indeed a bit Save.”
“But it’s more of the same, isn’t it? It is just a contest of putting the way you see yourself against the way others perceive you. They believe that if you make enough jokes, and build yourself up so much that you have armor around yourself, they will get inside the heads of their opponents and make them second guess themselves. That their image of you becomes stronger. Then you lose.”
“So will you let them?”
“No. I have enough going on in my head.”
Clearly.
“When any one of them talks or types a bunch of stuff on the twitter it is autofellatio. It’s hard to bend down that low but damned if these people don’t give it a good try. And those four sure do know how to work their mouths around their proverbial phalluses. What did you tell them last time? You wanted to remove the burden of the championships away from them. We have a chance to do this again. Anastasia believes that win or lose, they are still considered the best there is. That’s some plot armor right there. There is no growth. No fall to rise out from. No lesson or change. Coupled that with Lisa and it’s the blind leading the blind. They’re good, really good, but we can make them great. Forget balance this is about tearing them down. Zack and Benny also believe they have one over on our name because of the Freebird rules, so there’s another opportunity for us to surprise and usurp.”
Aokigahara laughs at Fukushima covering her face and he removes her hands from it.
“What’s wrong?”
“Don’t call it that. They are promoting themselves. Raising their self-image in front of their competitors. They try to sow the seeds of doubt. Not… that!”
“Well that Benny has some fine lips, but I don’t think he even believes it. There’s some doubt in the boy. Anyone coming back from stalling has that doubt that maybe they can go back to their old ways. That is why I don’t believe in rehabilitation or AA. His words show that doubt in him. This can make him strong to not want to go back to that but it can also make him weak. So let’s make him as weak as he can to rebuild himself again embracing his flaws. And Zack Fantana is just… boring. He is most exciting when he dies.” Aokigahara looks at Fukushima’s rune circle on the floor. “Hey, can we call them up on one of those things?”
“No, I think clones don’t pass on into the afterlife.”
“Bummer. Anyway, Zack is the friend tagging along for the ride. He’s a good friend and this gave them both a purpose. They’re in this match to prove their worth and now they get the team that won the championship we won. Anyways, I am not much for nostalgia. They can all stick a thumb in their butts to pull out all the times they beat a Zombie in our many matches together to enhance their autofellatio, but that is just too much distraction for someone that wants to get something done. I keep my eyes open when I do battle. I look forward. My flaws are written on my skin. My tongue is only used to serve others. This match is another show of force.“
As Aokigahara crouches down and explains to our heroine the details of being in a war of attrition between factions the doesn’t notice the softer footsteps approaching the room. The new figurehead of the clan and one that you are all familiar with casts a shadow on the doorway. Aokigahara, as eloquent as the brute was, stops his dialogue and nods at his daughter, Kimitsu Zombie stands over Fukushima looking over the mess in the room. I did tell her to get rid of it, didn’t I?
Kimitsu stiffens up as she enters the room and sees the candles and the runes, circles, and books. She adjusts her kimono as she steps over the threshold cupping her hand around a small bulge at her midsection. She then spots the phone recording in the distance. She walks up to Fukushima and pats her on the head then pulls her hair back lightly in a fist to make her look up. Aokigahara stands but puts his hands in his pockets. Kimitsu smiles.
“Are you still streaming?”
“I wanted to see if I could do it.”
“Did you get anything?”
“No.”
“If you called me, I would have answered.”
“I know.”
Kimitsu leans down to kiss Fukushima on the forehead then walks up to the camera standing so that she is between Aokigahara and Fukushima.
“Hello, Union. I know you all have questions. The answers to those questions will come in due time. At Guerilla Warfare you will get one of those answers in the form of Aokigahara and Fukushima. As for the question of my leadership decisions at the time of Tokyo-sensei’s untimely demise? It is a slightly new direction for the clan.”
She primly moves the hem of her kimono aside to kneel down formally. Aokigahara helps her by bracing her arm. Fukushima rushes to sit next to her but can’t seem to find a way to help.
“Tokyo-sensei was always reactive. He cared too much about sportsmanship. This is all well and good in the grand scope of things but we all know how dirty this business can get. And if there is going to be any dirt thrown on the good name of wrestling then we will be the ones controlling the mudslinging. I had the HSDS and the Dead End Friends attacked before their match came to a definitive end because I felt it would be the best way to garner attention. In a way, it was my small sacrifice in his memory. We all needed to let off some steam. What better way to do it than to stuff the mouths of the two most boisterous teams in the world?”
Aokigahara chuckles at this glancing at Fukushima who slowly shakes her head. Kimitsu continues.
“That earned us this shot and these two don’t know their bounds. That is because now there are none anymore. I will be a different leader than Tokyo-sensei. I will be more of a consciousness than a conscience. With my leadership, they will realize their full potential. If you think you knew what these two can do, then you will be surprised.” She looks back at Fukushima who stands up straighter in her gaze. “There will be no more cages put around their true natures. They will be free to act and behave however they were made. It was this society that made us who we really are. I say that there is nothing wrong with that, but we should be allowed to act according to these measures. So stomp your feet, and beat your chest dismissing all this as the bullshit you think it is because that makes you feel better. When this war is over, the name Zombie will still be standing on the top of Union Battleground once again.”
Fukushima stares in awe at the back of Kimitsu’s head, her view hidden from the camera as Aokigahara stands up to mug and grin directly in front of it. Kimitsu looks back at her with an expressionless face and leaves after placing a handkerchief in her lap. Fukushima is confused, but she doesn’t notice the tears that are falling down her face removing the mask.
