A not so long, actually really short time ago
In a galaxy… really really close. Like this galaxy.
Cue the loud burst of John Williams music as a door swings open and Danny Rizzo steps into a familiar apartment completely unaware of what was waiting for him on the other side of the door. A place that he had called home for many months now was completely foreign to him as it had become the residence of Leela Watts and Kaven Drell. The simple thought of Drell sent bursts of anger radiating throughout his entire body, causing him to clench his fists and take a deep breath to settle his nerves. A once tight friendship now frayed, and some would say it was over the slender blonde that was lounging on a couch nearby in a Princess Leia onesie.
Star Wars had been something the two of them had related on early in their relationship. For most of his life Danny Rizzo had fashioned himself the Luke Skywalker sort. The pure hero who was destined to conquer the forces of evil. As the years passed on, though, and the events of Valor Pro Wrestling unfolded as well as the things that had occurred in his relationship with Leela, the hero he now found himself relating to was more of the anti-hero that was Han Solo. A rebel, willing to bend the rules a bit and do whatever was necessary to see his own goals achieved. Yes, he had become a bit more selfish. And yes, he had done some things that maybe he wasn’t proud of. But every good story has its central characters go through valleys in their personal lives before their goals were truly achieved. They had to learn, and grow, before they could become who they were meant to be.
Along the way, however, were friends. Confidants. Sometimes those friends and confidants caused one another pain, but together they managed to overcome the obstacles set before them. And that was the journey that he and Leela were on now. Though their relationship wasn’t what it once had been. They were no longer romantically tied together. He still knew her like the back of his hand, for the most part. But the scene before him was one that shocked even him and he stared at her curiously.
“What the fuck are you wearing, Leela?”
Leela jumped up from the couch a little more enthusiastic then she probably meant to. Truthfully this had been the first time she had seen Danny in a few days and she was really happy to see him. Even making sure that Kaven wouldn’t be home so he could come by. That was the last thing she needed. Them getting into a brawl in the apartment they all once shared. She rolled her eyes at him for his comments though.
“Um.. It’s a Princess Leia onesie. It’s STAR WARS DAY. Don’t act like you’re surprised by this.”
“It’s three in the afternoon and you’re in pajamas still. We’ve got work to do. Regardless of everything else going on, we’re too good to be caught off guard by Maxx Bennett and Van Owen.”
“Fine.”
Leela sighed. He was right. No matter what day it was they still had a tag match coming up, and Maxx and Van Owen may have been new to the world of wrestling, but it didn’t mean they weren’t capable of stealing a victory away from the more advanced Leela and Danny. She didn’t want that. So she grabbed the zipper to her pjs and unzipped the onesie. Stepping out of it to reveal she was wearing clothes underneath it. Black shorts with a Star Wars logo on them and a Baby Yoda tank top. She threw the onesie down on the couch and presented herself with some jazz hands.
“I’m ready. I stay ready Danny. I want to be nice but I’ve been in this business long enough to know when to take things seriously. Maxx and Van Owen are going to try their hardest but I really want this win for us. I really want those Tag Titles for us.”
For a moment he cocked his head curiously at her as she unzipped the onesie and stripped down. He had started to speak up and stop her only to realize that she was also wearing clothes underneath. Of course she was. Shaking his head, half in amusement and half in dismay he then nodded in agreement to what she had to say.
“I know you do. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned about this business is that you’ve got to be able to anticipate what your opponents are going to throw at you. For too long early in my career in Valor, I sat back and let my opponents throw whatever they wanted at me and I reacted to it. But not any longer. We both know what’s coming. We both know what they’re going to say. There’s going to be a thousand cracks about cuckholding, because that’s one of those hot button words that the supposed cool kids like to throw around. Everyone wants to be the next star who fits that old 4CW mould. You’ll hear them talk about the fact that we’ve broken up, and that surely means that our chemistry is off. I wouldn’t expect anything less from someone like Maxx who bases her personal value off of whether or not someone says yes when she opens her legs.”
A soft sigh escapes him as he shoulders rise and fall, anticipatory disappointment at what he knows is to come from his opponents etched into his expression.
“I shouldn’t have to tell you both this, but one of the things that matters least in the wrestling business is what is going on between two people outside of the ring. At least, it’s one of the least significant things for those who stick around long enough, and who make the sort of impact that Leela and I have throughout our careers. What matters is perseverance, something that Leela has personified from the moment she first stepped into the ring. And you don’t earn the nickname The UnYielding like I did if you aren’t able to rise to even the most challenging of occasions.”
Glancing over at Leela, he holds a finger up to indicate that he’s about to toss the conversation back to her in just a moment.
“You know, one of the things that I hear all the time is that what someone accomplishes in singles wrestling means nothing when it comes to tag teams. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. Experience matters. Patterns of achievement and success matter. The two of us, we’ve spent years establishing patterns of success, and showing that even when we fall we get back up and overcome. And even though the two of us haven’t spent months together working as a tag team, we understand what it takes to win. We eat, sleep and breathe this business and aren’t spending our days worried about what picture might get whose attention, or what dance routine will make a Burlesque club owner the happiest. At the end of the day, we win. And I don’t need to be able to make the kessel run in 12 parsecs to tell you that that, is what will separate the two of us from the two of you when it’s all said and done.”
Danny looked over at Leela but she was smiling at him. His Star Wars reference made her so happy but then she realized the conversation was back to her and she looked towards the camera with a grin on her face.
“I think what Danny really means is that you Maxx and Van Owen are relatively new to the world of wrestling, and it shows. You guys spend a lot of time caring more about your personal lives then what you’re doing when it comes to Wrestling. Which is why it’s safe to assume you two will be more focused on OUR personal lives than what we’ve done in Wrestling. So I can inform you about an interesting fact. Danny and I tagged before we were ever together in a relationship, or even dating for that matter. We barely knew each other and yet we were able to go out to the ring together in Valor Pro Wrestling, and through natural chemistry? We were able to win. We may not be a couple, but we’ve proven that even in the past that doesn’t matter. Relationship status doesn’t have anything to do with it when we have the passion, drive, and creativity that Danny and I bring to the ring.”
Leela patted Danny on the shoulder with a grin on her face. One that barely ever faltered, even in the face of adversity.
“See. Maxx and Van Owen don’t have alot of history. Not like Danny and I do. They're still trying to figure their place out in the Wrestling world, while we are already established. They’re going to be optimistic that this is their night. This will be their chance to elevate themselves to a new level, but look what happened to The Republic when they overestimated themselves. They got their second Death Star blown up and were promptly defeated. Van Owen is proud to be a Former Golden Ticket Champion. A title that changes so many hands in one night it is unreal. Maxx? I don’t think she’s been able to accomplish much more either. What have we done? Danny, you're the last Apex Champion. Beating Chris Callum to do it. I’m a TWO time World Champion. I overcame one of the biggest bullies to grace a ring in Ashley Tierney, and beat Josh Kennedy when he was in his prime! The force is STRONG with this team. While Maxx and Van Owen are too busy getting high off their own vain need for attention on social media. The Force is Weak with that team. We’re the Jedi Masters, and they're the young Padawans. They aren’t bad, they’re just not as good.”
Where she smiled and was happy, as was usually the case with Leela regardless of the situation, Danny found himself falling into his old pattern of intensity that had been a trademark of his tenure in Valor Pro Wrestling.
“Leela, she’s the nice one. When she wins, she doesn’t want her opponents to feel bad. It’s what makes her unique in this business, that compassion that she shows for others who won’t show the same compassion for her. Me? I used to be that way. I used to be a lot like her, in fact. But then I got sick and tired of the world taking advantage of me and I have some hard conversations with myself. I had to learn some lessons the hard way, the way that you two are going to have to learn a lesson the hard way at Lights Out in Washington, DC. Sometimes you have to pass through fire in order to come out refined of the impurities that existed beforehand. In Washington, DC the whole world is going to come crashing down around the two of you. And when it’s over, you’ll pick yourselves back up and you’ll learn from the lesson that Leela and I are going to teach the two of you about respect. About integrity. About paying your dues. There’s no gimmicks to be had like you will find in abundance when you Wrestle With Christ. There’s no hope that you might show up at the building and find the doors closed and the lights off, as is common for those who like to travel the road of kings. What you’ll find at the end of that ramp in our nations capital, is a battleground with two opponents who have everything to prove. To themselves and to the world.”
Strumming his fingers together in thought, Danny gave consideration to his next words as the soft sounds of that John Williams music played gently in the background, building tension up as he and Leela worked toward the conclusion of their comments for their upcoming match.
“Luke wasn’t a master with a lightsaber the first time he picked it up. Han wasn’t perfect with his blaster. Those things took time. They took dedication. It took a lot of effort for them to become the heroes that their world needed. They weren’t perfect, and neither are Leela and I. We’ve got our flaws. We’ve got our own personal issues. But what we do have? Is time served. We’ve got blood spilled. We’re not picking up a lightsaber or a blaster for the first time. We’ve got you scoped in, and we’re ready to pull the trigger on May Eighth in DC. Our aim is impeccable and while the two of you might put up a good fight. Like stormtroopers, you couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn. And when the time comes, there won’t be any argument over who shot first the way the debate wages on over Han and Greedo. No, it’ll be us. And we won’t miss.”
Leela makes guns with her fingers and pew pew sound effects as Danny speaks his last words. She laughs to herself before bouncing on her feet excitedly allowing her hands to fall down by her sides.
“I’ve known Danny for a long time. I know him like the back of my hand. There’s not a person on the planet who knows me better than he does. Inside and outside the ring. The chemistry from day one has been seamless. You can’t force that. You can’t make it happen. You either have it or you don’t. Maxx and Van Owen aren’t exactly sure if they have the in ring chemistry. Opponents like Danny and I aren’t the ones you should be testing that theory out on. Maxx has made a habit of always trying to swim in lakes when she should stick to small ponds. It hasn’t quite worked out for her. People have used her as a vagina slip joke. They’ve mocked her. I want better for her. I’ll never put her down for a ring mishap but 4CW was one of the biggest companies and the most you’re remembered for there is a wardrobe malfunction. You had every chance and you spent more time following a melodramatic boy around then focusing on being a success against some of the biggest names.”
Leela shook her head and hung it low. Resting her hands on her hips as she looked at the floor for a moment before looking back up.
“And You Van. I don’t see you doing much better. Treading water everywhere you go. Trying to find the right combination hoping something sticks. Spending your time making penis jokes on social media. You’re okay with being laid out. You’re okay with being part of the gimmick companies instead of wanting bigger and better things for yourself. You’re okay with being a joke. So you two being shameless and vulgar automatically means you’re going to be a great tag team? That doesn’t make any sense. This is just another situation where I’m sorry to say that Maxx Bennett and Van Owen are biting off more than they can chew but it’s already too late and uhhh...guys I’m sorry to say but you’re standing above the Rancor Pit.”
“You see, here’s the thing.”
For a heartbeat Danny paused, staring directly into the eyes of their opponents, whenever it was that they would tune in. If ever. God knew at that moment in time Maxx was probably on her knees for some unknown with her mascara running down her cheeks.
“All the shit talk in the world can only take you so far.”
He held up his index finger to indicate that he was only just beginning to make his next series of points.
“All the promises that you’re going to be able to work fluidly together will only get you so far.”
A second finger is extended upward.
“All of the hopes and the dreams that the two of you have for your individual success and more importantly to us, your success as a tag team, only can take you so far.”
His ring finger extends and then in quick succession he counts one, two and three again.
“All of those things are superficial, just like championship gold. If you want to beat the two of us, you’ve got to love the battle. You’ve got to embrace the fight. You’ve got to have the grit to dig down deep when all hope seems to be lost. And that, that doesn’t come from exchanging a few text messages and gassing each other up on social media. It comes from actually knowing each other. From understanding what makes the other person tick? What you think because she’s not riding my dick anymore..”
Leela suddenly interjected.
“Language, Sir.”
Shrugging, Danny continued.
“... that she doesn’t know me as well as anyone in this world? You think because I’m not bending her over a couch that my understanding of what makes Leela Watts who she is has suddenly disappeared? Changes come in life just like change comes in this business. The ones who truly devote themselves to it, they’re the ones that remain. Leela Watts. Danny Rizzo. Regardless of the storms, here we stand together. United. Unbroken. And look to the future.”
Bringing both of his hands together, and holding them out in front of himself, he gives the two a nod.
“May the Fourth be with you today. Because when May the Eighth comes, a better fate awaited Alderaan than the one that awaits you both.”
Erupting loudly, the music of the final credits of a Star Wars film cuts out all other noise as the picture of Danny and Leela standing together fades into a wide angle shot of a star filled night sky.
