Can you imagine what you’ve done?
Words we hear as the tape plays out for us. The tape winds inside of the machine, doing it’s best to track as the picture clears up. This tape is called “BE PROUD”, the words hang on the black screen for a moment.
It cuts away, leaving us with something different. This wasn’t supposed to be here, it’s been taped over.
Instead, we see a bright neon background of a city, palm trees on an equally bright set. In the middle of the set, on the stage, is a chair. And on that chair is a mask.
A rooster mask.
The camera zooms in on the mask, slowly, as the audio cuts out.
The scene cuts, as we see Bryan Williams now sitting in the chair. He’s dressed to match the set around him, something you’d see on early eighties television.
He’s smiling, I don’t know why.
He’s not happy to be here.
WILLIAMS: "I suppose congratulations should be in order."
Bryan’s voice cuts through the background noise, what could hardly be passed for music is suddenly cut off.
WILLIAMS: "Danny, you’ve done it."
Bryan claps, loudly, as he outstretches his arms.
WILLIAMS: "You’ve got the one thing you wanted most in this world. Well, besides your matches with Johnny Vachon and Erik Holland. Oh, and your inclusion into the GHB. Either way, you’ve finally gotten your match with me! How excited you must be."
Bryan feigns a smile, large and uncomfortable as he sits in the chair. Eventually, the smile fades, and he begins to speak again.
WILLIAMS: "A big match too, Union Battleground versus NVR Wrestling. Go ahead and put that feather in your cap, you’ve earned it. Make sure to save some space for the next matches you’ll be obsessing over after this. Dakota Smith, Indi Rhyder, hell why don’t we throw in ol’ Dick Devereaux for good measure?"
Bryan gives the camera a wink, and an audience laugh track is thrown in for good measure.
We know that nobody else is here. The camera cuts, and we see for ourselves.
Bryan is standing when we cut back.
WILLIAMS: "You see Danny, I know your kind. I know that you’re so desperate for the attention you’ll go through any lengths to grab it. You’ll turn on your own, just to join another group for no reason. Imagine that, just weeks after making Vachon your bitch you went ahead and became his."
Bryan shakes his head, chuckling to himself.
WILLIAMS: "Couldn’t be me.
No, Danny, you couldn’t be me."
Bryan sighs, staring into the camera. There’s a pause, dead air as Bryan stares for an uncomfortable amount of time. He isn’t thinking of what to say next, we can already see those gears turning in his head.
No, he’s looking at us.
WILLIAMS: "You couldn’t be Union Battleground Champion. You couldn’t take over this promotion, and run it in the name of NVR or GHB. All of your boasting on social media will just be empty words. You couldn’t do any of those things, Danny. Because we wouldn’t allow it. We wouldn’t let you do any of those things."
Bryan smiles.
WILLIAMS: "And I think you know that. I think you understand the trouble you’ve gotten yourself into. Covet the idea all you want, you know that stepping into the ring with me isn’t the brightest of ideas.”
Bryan grows quiet again.
WILLIAMS: "Not for nothing, Danny, but the Butcher couldn’t end me. You think a wolf would do any better?”
The tension is broken in half when Bryan tosses the chair off of the set. He spins around, looking at what to toss next.
WILLIAMS: "Union won’t allow their name to be besmirched by a collaborator like you. If I had it my way you wouldn’t even be stepping into this ring with me. You haven’t earned the honor, and you never will. You are just a puppet, a plaything for those who are even fouler than you. They will get bored with you, and they will toss you aside."
Bryan pauses.
WILLIAMS: "Anyone with a brain could see that coming a mile away though. For you, this will be breaking news.”
After removing a few more pieces of set furniture, Bryan pauses. He stands in the middle of the stage, the lights dim and darkens around him. A single light shines down, directly onto Bryan.
WILLIAMS: "Unfortunately, this match is set in stone. Our two companies will have their representatives meet in the ring. If I can’t look forward to facing you at least I can take solace in knowing I will represent my banner proudly. I will carry their name into battle, and emerge victorious as their champion."
The Union logo displays brilliantly behind Bryan, the scene glitches for a moment and we catch sight of the mask.
When it cuts back to normal we see Bryan holding the Union Battleground Championship over his left shoulder.
WILLIAMS: "This match isn’t just to hype our promotions up, this isn’t just to get our good names out there for the public to see. This is a chance to establish domination, complete, and utter control. The kind of control you get when you realize your ultimate potential. When you get rid of cancer for good."
The scene glitches again, the mask is right up into the camera. It cuts back, Bryan is sitting back in the chair. No longer wearing an awful suit, he’s now dressed for a match. Bloodstained jacket and all.
Bryan holds his stained bat.
WILLIAMS: "You may think you want this, Danny, but you’re better off hiding behind your new pals. You’re better off dealing with the Tolsons of the world, that’s more akin to the competition you deserve."
Bryan laughs at his dumb joke.
WILLIAMS: "You won’t catch me wasting my time here.
You won’t watch me fall under your boot.
You won’t see Union Battleground fail against NVR."
WILLIAMS: "There was a time when I thought we might have been on the same wavelength, there might have been a time when I thought you could have been a decent opponent. I thought that maybe this kid had a good head on his shoulders, and things were going to be okay. I thought he could represent his company well, in the grand scheme of things."
Bryan scoffs, rolling his eyes.
WILLIAMS: "Those times have gone."
Bryan stands to his feet, sullen about the whole ordeal.
WILLIAMS: "When it comes time for us to meet, you will truly see what a champion is supposed to be like. You will witness a real champion in the flesh. You will be exposed to the failures that will soon wait for you after we are finished. Karma catches up quickly, my boy, and you have a lot of it coming your way."
The scene glitches out again, but when the mask shows up he doesn’t leave. Not this time, the lights are gone again.
Things cut back to normal, and he’s still there.
Looking. Watching.
WILLIAMS: "Dance like a monkey for your comrades, because it’s all you’re worth at this point."
Bryan grabs the Union Championship on his shoulder, slowly raising it up high above his head.
WILLIAMS: "As for me, I’ll make sure that Union is represented properly. They’ll have a champion they can be truly proud of."
Bryan chuckles to himself.
WILLIAMS: "Something that couldn’t be said for NVR."
And just like that, he’s gone.
The scene ends, cutting to black.
